Environment

With global warming already causing rising sea levels and dramatic increases in temperatures in the Arctic, progressives believe in the need to reverse the trends and safeguard our planet though conservation, a strong emphasis on renewable energy sources, better management of fossil fuel consumption and improved education.
In its most recent report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) blamed humans for global warming and warned that hotter temperatures and rises in sea level would continue for centuries.
Ohio is a major greenhouse gas contributor and emitted 287 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in 2000 alone. Ohio also is a second in the nation in the manufacture of wind turbine components, a ranking that positions the state well to be among the national leaders in renewable energy production.
Our goals include:
•Insuring that energy providers transition into renewable and sustainable energy sources.
•Promoting state incentives for the development and use of renewable energy sources, including a state tax credit program for bio fuels and renewable fuels.
•Individual management of fossil fuel consumption through alternative transportation and conscious fuel use.
•Community programs to educate and introduce neighborhoods or cities to alternative energy sources.
•Expanding higher education classes in environmental sciences, engineering and utility management to include a greater emphasis on alternative energy technology.
•Supporting transportation, land use and economic development policies designed to curb sprawl and minimize our dependence on the automobile
•Coordinate efforts to clean up Lake Erie and the other Great Lakes
