Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO The Humane Society of the United States
The Humane Society of the United States is conceding defeat on State Issue 2, but the organization's president says he'll be back to fight another battle in Ohio.
Wayne Pacelle, president and chief executive officer of the Humane Society, said in an interview that he knew the Issue 2 battle couldn't be won which is why the organization didn't spend any money opposing it.
“We just needed to see this issue resolved before we launch reform efforts in Ohio to phase out the confinement of animals on factory farms,” he said. “We haven’t made the final decision to do that, but it’s very likely.”
Issue 2, which is passing by a nearly two-to-one margin, will establish a 13-member board which will have autonomous authority to pass and enforce rules regarding raising of livestock and poultry. [Columbus Dispatch, November 3, 2009]
