High Price of Gas

Over the last few weeks I have heard many "reasons" why the price of gas is setting records.  The reasons come from "the man on the street", Oil Industry "Spokespersons", politicans and economists.  They include:

  • Oil Shortages
  • Refinery "pinch points"
  • Shortages of Refineries
  • Aging Pipelines
  • Fluctuating Demand
  • Change in Quality of Crude
  • Increased Demand in China and India
  • High Gas Taxes
  • The Iraq War
  • Unrest in Venezuela
  • Political Instability in Nigeria
  • Hurricane Katrina
  • Environmental Regulations

..... and many others ad nauseum.

No matter which of those conditions exist, it still can be clarified in one phrase:

"RECORD HIGH GAS PRICES - RECORD HIGH OIL COMPANY PROFITS"

Can anyone else detect a remote correlation here?

Strategic Reserve

...And let's not forget that Bush pushed to double the size of the strategic oil reserve in his State of the Union (after bleeding it dry to keep prices down in the runup to the '06 election).

Yes, record profits AND record prices AND war profiteering SHOULD be looked into. I wonder if there is some group tasked with doing investigations, maybe to look into collusion by oil companies, or maybe to look into unfair pricing practices.

Hmmmmm.... Well, I'm stumped.

Don't worry, Kelli. Listen to the Republicans: "If market forces determine that gas prices are too high, then people will stop buying gas from those providers charging the most, forcing prices down. At the very least, people will just stop buying gas, to show their displeasure. That will cause oil companies to change their bad business practices."

Market Forces will fix the problem. Don't you worry. No need for Congressional micro-managers meddling with energy prices. What do they think they are? Economists? We need LESS governmental regulation, Kelli.
