Spend & Spin!
Payday Lenders Continue to Spend & Spin

The payday lobby seems to think that their opponents are being bankrolled by "special interests," apparently disregarding the fact that they are one big "special interest." In Arizona, the payday lenders have exceeded the $9 million mark in their efforts to overturn a pro-consumer bill in that state.

You can read an Article from the Arizona Star, here: http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/254016. The article suggests that the industry's opponents raise and spend next to nothing in comparison.

In Ohio, the payday lobby is outspending their opponents by incredible margins. The disparity in expenditures is easily evident just by looking at the millions of dollars spent on television ads by the payday lobby versus the unusual technique being utilized by the proponents of payday lending reform: YouTube.com! CNN Money and Forbes Magazine picked up an Associated Press story about the efforts to compete with a multi-million dollar lobby: http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2008/08/26/ap5360144.html.

From the article:

Up against a multimillion dollar ad campaign, defenders of Ohio's tough new payday lending law are turning to YouTube.com.

The Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio has created an online video that warns viewers not to be deceived by the payday lending industry, which is trying to repeal the law.

You can view the YouTube video, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDoeXujagE4

Despite enumerable examples of evidence that the payday lobby is working diligently to deceive voters, the industry continues to throw up smoke and mirrors trying to change the subject. The facts, however, remain the same. Payday lending is a debt trap and 391% interest is too high!

Don't be fooled by the payday lobby! 391% interest is not freedom! If you think 391% interest is too high, VOTE YES ON ISSUE 5!

lying petition circulators

I ran into one of the blue T-shirt wearing circulators today outside of the federal building. Guess what? She told me rates will go DOWN to 5%.

These guys are committed to lying because if they tell the truth, no one will sign the damn things.

Keep after them!

I saw the ballot language on line. It's very confusing.

YES is a vote for lower rates.

I ran into a voter who said a petition circulator actually presented herself as being a member of the Ohio Coalition for Responsible Lending - the very group that truly supports lower interest rates!

Can you believe that? The payday lobby seems willing to do ANYTHING to get their referendum keeping 391% interest rates on the ballot! It's just a shame what they are doing to our electoral process!

Vote Yes on Issue 5!

Falsehood Information

When you built a course of action on a deceived foundation, you can certainly create a rocky aftermath. Some politicians are looking to wipe out the payday loan industry and sadly, some have succeeded in many areas. This action reflects the groundless idea or assumption that payday lenders fall under the same category as illegal loan sharks. This ongoing challenge to pass this legislature attempts to restrict or take away your ability to get a payday loan for unforeseen emergency cash needs. Please do not be misinformed and educate yourself, friends and family on the right of financial independence.

Payday lending IS legal loan sharking!
By Free Fallin Oct 1st 2008 at 11:15 am EDT (Updated Oct 1st 2008 at 11:15 am EDT)
The billions in profits made by the payday lending industry has been built on the foundation of a fundamentally flawed business model. Payday lending is a defective product whose success is dependent upon trapping people in debt. Payday lenders do fit into the category as illegal loan sharks - some illegal loan sharks actually offer lower rates! Vote yes on issue 5! Legalized loan sharking, a.k.a. predatory payday lending, needs to be reigned in!
What a joke

Billions in profits? Any proof of that? Explain why if Payday lending is loan sharking are there not criminal charges being filed against the lenders?

Any answers?

While the 'billions' quote was a figure of speach, the actual number of $318 million/year is no less horrendous, if we remember it is taken from people in desperate financial straits, who typically get caught in a web of debt from which they have great difficulty escaping. When the new law is confirmed by a 'yes' vote on Issue 5, anybody charging 391% APR WILL be subject to prosecution. That this was legal under the old law was due to unintended consequences of the previous law that enabled an unscrupulous industry to offer a defective loan model that caused enormous harm. That was the reason the new law was overwhelmingly passed by both houses of the Ohio legislature with the enthusiastic approval of both Republican and Democratic office holders.

Payday lending will not be wiped out by the reform law, once it is upheld by a "yes" vote on Issue 5. Already weeks ago, two thirds of payday lenders applied for a license to operate under the new rules. Allowing borrowers time to dig themselves out of debt without usurous rates is the right way to go.

As is the case in every state that has passed an unfortunate version of payday "reform", the companies will try a product that is permitted under the new law, then when they can't break even on the new product, they will close.

If you are voting yes on issue five you are voting to put 6,000 people out of work
