Petro Blasts Betty (audio)
Audio recently sent to me via email catches Jim Petro blasting the despicable campaign tactics of Betty Montgomery. In the file, a questioner asks Petro what he thinks of the Bar Association recently commenting on negative campaigning related to attacks on lawyers and judges. Jim agrees with their take and deals a blow to Betty and her gutter politics.

Rough Transcript

Questioner: What do you think of the Bar Association coming out and basically blasting away on people who talk about lawyers and judges and their decisions.

Petro: I think the Bar Association properly points out that lawyers don't always get to choose their client. I mean, there are times in my career- 33 years now as of...but there are times when the courts basically said to me 'look, we want you to defend this guy. He's a bad guy, but somebody needs to defend him'. What a lawyer does in defense of a client should not become a negative issue in a political campaign.

Eric, do you think the "Petro Blasts Betty" headline might be considered a little inflammatory or sensational? Jim's not exactly blasting--he's just stating the ground rules of decorum, ethics, and truth in the public dialogue.

With that headline, you're leaning out a bit far and essentially trying to balance Betty's imbalance with another. We somehow need to change the dialogue, to bring it to the level where we're discussing, and dismissing those things that don't measure up, like dishonest campaign tactics. There's too much noise and not enough focus otherwise.

Solution? Something like, "Petro comments on negative campaigning smearing attorneys" followed by "Eric smacks Betty with Petro comment." A two-step. More coverage and commentary.

OK Tim, here is my thoughtful post. Of course the headline was sensational. I'll give you that. I try to make people take notice and if you ask me, what Jim said was blasting the campaign techniques of Betty and those like her - as was the President of the Bar Association.

I fully understand about dialogue, but you simply get run over like a freight train if you stand around talking about creating dialogue when others are pounding you over the head with vitriol. I dunno, maybe I was just in a fighting mood when I wrote it, or maybe I'm just a sucker for a good headline.

I am intrigued by your two step theory. I've always been something of a freestyler myself, but I might try that two step sometime.
