March 8, 2010-Republican challenger John Kasich has extended his lead over incumbent Democrat Ted Strickland to 11 points in Ohio’s gubernatorial race.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Ohio voters finds Kasich leading Strickland 49% to 38%. Six percent (6%) prefer another candidate, and seven percent (7%) are undecided.

Last month, Kasich held a six-point lead - 47% to 41% - over Strickland, mirroring the 47% to 40% lead he had in early January. These results also show little change from the first survey of the contest conducted in December.

In the U.S. Senate race in Ohio, none of the top contenders are gaining ground at this point, with Republican Rob Portman still holding a modest lead.

Voters not affiliated with either major party heavily favor Kasich 60% to 22%, a double-digit jump from early February.

Kasich carries male voters by 21 points over Strickland, but the two candidates break roughly even among women voters.

Strickland, who served six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, was elected governor in 2006 with 60% of the vote. But a declining state economy and a general frustration with incumbents seem to be making the race a referendum on Strickland to some degree. Incumbents who earn less than 50% of the vote at this stage of a campaign are considered potentially vulnerable.

Forty-three percent (43%) of voters in Ohio at least somewhat approve of the job Strickland has been doing, including 14% who strongly approve. Slightly more than half (53%) disapprove of his performance, with 26% who strongly disapprove. The latest findings show little change from the previous survey.

Kasich spent 18 years in the House but chose not to seek reelection in 2000, instead making a brief run for the GOP presidential nomination that year. Since then, he has worked as an investment banker and a periodic host on Fox TV.

Twenty-four percent (24%) offer a very favorable opinion of Kasich, while just 12% view him unfavorably, roughly the same as last month.

Strickland is viewed very favorably by 20% and very unfavorably by 24%, marking no change from the previous survey.

At this point in a campaign, Rasmussen Reports considers the number of people with a strong opinion more significant than the total favorable/unfavorable numbers. Twenty-three percent (23%) of Ohio voters have no opinion of Kasich so far, compared to just six percent (6%) who offer no opinion of Strickland.
