The Humane Society of the United States is conceding defeat on State Issue 2, but the organization's president says he'll be back to fight another battle in Ohio.

Wayne Pacelle, president and chief executive officer of the Humane Society, said in an interview that he knew the Issue 2 battle couldn't be won which is why the organization didn't spend any money opposing it.

“We just needed to see this issue resolved before we launch reform efforts in Ohio to phase out the confinement of animals on factory farms,” he said. “We haven’t made the final decision to do that, but it’s very likely.”

Issue 2, which is passing by a nearly two-to-one margin, will establish a 13-member board which will have autonomous authority to pass and enforce rules regarding raising of livestock and poultry.

Ohio Humane Scorecard
By Shirley T. Nov 5th 2009 at 1:19 pm EST (Updated Nov 5th 2009 at 1:19 pm EST)
We need someone to develop a scorecard on how Ohio politicans are voting on animal laws (e.g., whether they're cosponsoring bills to regulate puppy mills; whether they were cheerleaders for Issue 2; etc.) That way we can bring Ohio's animal laws out of the stone age so that intelligent open-minded people and consumers can feel proud to be in this state. It would be great if ProgressOhio, with all the great work that it's done, would team up with HSUS or some other group to create this and put it on its web page.
