Post from Dave Harding's Blog:
Strickland Energy Plan And The Renewable Portfolio Standard

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland announced his Energy, Jobs and Progress plan yesterday that includes an advanced energy portfolio requiring at least 25 percent of the electricity sold in Ohio to be generated from renewable and advanced energy technologies by 2025, with no less than half of that energy created in Ohio.

Under Strickland's plan, by 2025, a minimum of 25 percent of the electricity sold in Ohio must be generated from advanced energy technology. No less than half of that energy will come from renewable sources, including biomass, wind, solar, biogas, geothermal, and hydro power.

Ohio's plan brings the number of U.S. states that either have—or have proposed— some form of renewable portfolio standard to 26, more than half the nation. That number does not include Illinois, Missouri, Virginia, and Vermont, which have set voluntary goals for adopting renewable energy instead of portfolio standards with binding targets.

Under Strickland's plan, by 2025, a minimum of 25 percent of the electricity sold in Ohio must be generated from advanced energy technology. No less than half of that energy will come from renewable sources, including biomass, wind, solar, biogas, geothermal, and hydro power. However, the Governor has stated he will include "clean coal" and nuclear projects in the proposed energy portfolio.

"We must implement an advanced energy portfolio standard in order to create thousands of new Ohio jobs. Next generation energy technologies, including renewable energy, fuel cells, clean coal, advanced nuclear, and cogeneration offer the promise of a secure energy future and a prosperous economic future," said Governor Strickland yesterday.

In addition, the plan calls for the updating and modernization of Ohio's electric infrastructure as well as for energy efficiency to play a central role in the state's electricity system.
