STRIPPERS TO UNVEIL “DANCERS FOR DEMOCRACY” ON TUESDAY
(Columbus) – Entertainers from across the state will gather in Columbus for a news conference on Tuesday, May 1, at 10 a.m. The event will take place in the offices of Progress Ohio, 265 S. Third Street, Columbus.

Dancers formed the grassroots organization “Dancers for Democracy” to try and combat Senate Bill 16, a measure that would limit the hours of adult businesses and ban patrons from coming within six feet of any nude or semi-nude entertainers. The six-foot rule will cause wages to drop off dramatically and force many of the dancers into minimum wage jobs, said Charity Fickisen, a Columbus dancer and chairwoman of the new organization.

Those who violate the rule could be found guilty of a first-degree misdemeanor – the same level of offense for negligent homicide or menacing by stalking.

“This bill is the latest effort by Citizens for Community Values to trample on free speech and individual liberties and deflects attention from the real issues of job creation and education that have crippled our Ohio economy,’’ said Brian Rothenberg, executive director of Progress Ohio.

“Most Ohioans have never seen and have never been impacted by this issue, yet once again our legislators seek headlines ignore the very real problems faced by a majority of Ohioans in their daily lives, said Rothenberg. Where will this stop? Will art be the next target or movies, video games – perhaps rap lyrics which even Ken Blackwell and his supporters defended in his primary campaign last year.

Tuesday’s event comes one day before the final legislative hearing on Senate Bill 16.

The news conference will include a demonstration of the six-foot rule.

Democracy is for everyone and that includes the right to protest.

Would imagine this will draw quite the press crowd looking to see the clothing on the protesters.
