Leading Legal Expert on Voting Calls GOP's Tactics "Blatant Voter Suppression"
COLUMBUS - With a leading legal expert on voting calling their tactics "blatant voter suppression," the Ohio Republican Party is now using their effort to scare and intimidate voters as a partisan fundraising tool. Ohio Republican Party Deputy Chairman Kevin DeWine sent out an email to supporters last night lambasting an Ohio law that was written by a Republican legislature, signed by a Republican governor and supported by the previous Bush/Cheney campaign chairman and Republican Secretary of State Ken Blackwell. DeWine goes on to ask for donations to the Ohio Republican Party.
The 2005 law has operated in Ohio for three primaries and two general elections, without complaint from the Ohio Republican Party. The same voting process exists in 30 other states across the country. In today's Columbus Dispatch, Daniel Tokaji, a leading legal expert on voting, describes the GOP effort as "blatant voter suppression."
"Not only has the Ohio Republican Party embarked upon a deliberate strategy of voter intimidation and voter suppression, they are now shamelessly using their scare tactics to raise money," said Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern. "This is the most blatant, most aggressive attempt at voter suppression that I have witnessed in my lifetime."
