In light of Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) release of his tax returns this week, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) urges the remaining presidential candidates, Sens. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and John McCain (R-AZ), to release their returns as well.
McCain was listed as the ninth-richest member of Congress last year by Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper.
It pegged McCain's net worth at more than $44 million, with most of the money coming from his wife, Cindy Hensley McCain, who is chairwoman of the nation's third-largest Anheuser-Busch beer distributorship. The family also has extensive real estate holdings.
McCain has never before made his tax returns public.
The campaign says it plans to release Mr. McCain's tax return for 2007 when he files it April 15, a spokeswoman said, pointing to Senate disclosure forms as evidence of previous financial openness.
Sen. McCain, who would be the oldest president ever elected, hasn't released his recent medical records, though his campaign pledges to do so.
They cite scheduling difficulties with his physicians at the Mayo Clinic for the delay.
