107 Mile Walk Brings Attention to Children's Health Issues
COLUMBUS - Today, State Senator Eric H. Kearney (D-Cincinnati) arrives at the Statehouse after embarking on a 107-mile walk from Cincinnati to Columbus to raise awareness of infant mortality and childhood obesity. He will be speaking on the Senate Building steps at 4 p.m.
The walk took Senator Kearney through seven counties over the course of four days. Senator Kearney will be greeted by supporters from across the state.
"Ohio's infant mortality rate is alarming and our childhood obesity rates are above the national average," Senator Kearney says. "The good news is we have the resources within our communities to address these problems. We know that early visits to the doctor and treatment can save lives."
"If we are going to tackle the childhood obesity problem, we need to get active and moving," says Dwight Tillery, President and CEO of The Center for Closing the Health Gap. "Senator Kearney is leading by example."
Senator Kearney has long been a champion of children's causes. Last week, his adoption loan program was included as part of the Capital Bill. This program will help defray some of the costs associated with adoption. Senator Kearney also sponsored legislation to require booster seats, to pay for lead removal from low-income family homes and to increase penalties for shooting a child during the course of a crime.
"The Legislature has been hard at work these last few weeks and I've enjoyed getting out of the Statehouse and stretching my legs," Senator Kearney says. "Raising awareness of infant mortality and childhood obesity is a great way to get started off on the right foot."
