Censorship at WVKO Party
I just left the WVKO party after the folks from True Majority had their Iran Mobile kicked off the property.

It seems the owner of the Makoy Party Center personally did not like the likeness of a nuclear bomb with John McCain riding on it -- called it offensive.

The Army had an event at the next door ballroom and yet after initially balking thinking it was a protest the Army personnel at their event did not complain and employees allowed the float in -- in fact many Army personnel were laughing in the parking lot about it. I very much doubt they want a three-front war.

Admittedly I'm fired up. This one man thinks these progressive views are in poor taste outside his building but is willing to allow those views to be expressed inside his building for free -- as long as progressives are heard only by themselves.

I'm tired of the progressive movement backing down from such nonsense. I'm told the owner of the facility donated it for the WVKO fundraiser -- so be it. Again, what he's saying is -- sure go ahead and be progressive behind closed doors.

Why do progressives allow themselves to be put in a closet -- whispering their concerns while a right-wing shouts away leading us into warmongering, rallying about the continued use of faulty intelligence whether WMDs or nuclear issues in Iran which commit our troops and our pocketbooks for a 100-year war as John McCain put it.

It's OK for John McCain to think it's funny to sing "Bomb,Bomb,Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran" -- that's not offensive. But for us to graphically speak about those consequences -- that -- that -- the owner of the Makoy Center thinks is offensive?

So if in the light of day some kids from Vermont choose to drive all the way to Ohio to point out pretty graphically the dangers of a three-front provocative war -- that can be censored.

As Executive Director of ProgressOhio I was invited to attend and speak to the WVKO audience.

I told Gary Richards of the station -- I would not and left after he tried -- to no avail to get the owner to change his mind.

If it is not OK to speak views outside in the light of day -- I'm not inclined to be party to relegate progressive speech to the whispers of a ballroom. That is why I left.

And whether it's one ad paid for from my own pocket, or money raised for ads, I do intend to put on the WVKO airwaves or local newspapers an ad about the censorship of the folks at the Makoy Center in Hilliard, Ohio.

Finally, if you hear those ads for Makoy on the airwaves of WVKO or other stations advertising the Makoy Center-- just remember -- the price of that ad was the censorship of the speech you fought so hard to get back on the airwaves.

Stephanie Miller's views may have been heard inside tonight -- but they were censored outside -- and somebody, somewhere ought to say enough.

I'm all for WVKO and keeping it on the air -- but as long as the progressive movement allows itself to be bottled up by folks like this building owner -- CHANGE will remain only a word.

Don't we have bigger things to complain about? WVKO obviously had a successful event. Party was well attended.

Iranmobile was scheduled to leave at 5 p.m. I saw it move to another area of the parking lot at 5:15, where it was more visible to the Army party (which was a formal event). It looked to me like they were deliberately trying to provoke the Army people.

Program to WVKO event says "A great BIG thanks to The Makoy Center."

So the owner called the cops when he got a complaint. So what?

Actually Jane. The owner did not call the cops. It was all worked out until he personally decided it was offensive.

So I guess its OK to party inside but be silenced outside. Some movement.

People sure thought it was a big deal when Clear Channel booted progressive radio and Tom Thon was threatening to arrest us during a protest at Clear Channel.

It actually is a big deal. Or else the movements about a party.
I didn't buy a ticket to a movement

Huz & I just spent $40 on a nice party.

Brian, are you saying the property owner doesn't have the right to keep certain people or vehicles off his property?

In response to Jane's original comment:

Just to keep the facts straight . . . The display only moved from it's parking space in the Reserved Parking area in front of the Emerald Building where the WVKO Event was being held, as directed by the owner of the Makoy Center who told them exactly where to move to and repark.

No one associated with the display in anyway intentionally antagonized anyone from any group at The Makoy yesterday.

There's been speculation that someone from The OCS event held in another building at The Makoy "complained" and that may have been what initiated the whole you must move and then you must go fiasco.

As I said in another thread:

"The IRANMOBILE was cleared though into the lot by Makoy staff and was parked in the reserved parking spaces directly in front of the WVKO party location.

The OCS event was in an entirely different building and the IRANMOBILE was not even visible from their event. The soldiers I spoke with were totally cool.

If it was because of the OCS event that the IRANMOBILE was made to leave, that's even worse . . .

I realize the right wing has pushed the country a long way in that no matter what you say politically you must first say you "honor the troops" and so forth, however, "the troops", as individuals, are just other citizens in our democracy and they have no rights greater than any other citizen.

Especially where free political speech is concerned."

Censorship happens. Get over it.

I have been told by Statehouse security people that I could not hold a homemade 9"x12" prochoice sign inside. I later learned at a PO event that there is no such sign restriction.

I have made numerous prochoice comments that have not been posted on the Ohio GOP and other sites. My letter to The Dispatch complaining about Ken Blackwell's "One Man, One Vote" comment was never published.

I have to put all these things in the "So What?" pile. It doesn't matter in the big scheme of things.

I'm sorry I jumped to conclusions. I observed a Hilliard police cruiser and the Iranmobile -- past its scheduled departure time -- moving from party entrance to another parking spot where it was now visible to those arriving in formal gowns to some kind of Army function. I'm glad you clarified.

I think you are over-reacting because of your friendship with these guys.
