Licking County Students for a Democratic Society
We are Students for A Democratic Society of Licking County. We represent the schools that are in Licking County. The SDS is a nonpartisan organization of students across the United States who are concerned about the current condition of the nation, the US's influence on the rest of the world, and everything that is happening outside of our doorstep. Students for a Democratic Society was created in the early 1960's and fought the oppression of the time. They eventually became one of the driving forces of the civil rights, anti-war, and free speech movements. By the end of the '60s, SDS became militant and faded away. We plan on bringing back the original ideology of SDS and stay peaceful. The Licking County SDS chapter is specifically concerned with making the anti-war movement more popular and organized in Licking County. As well as the overwhelming need for education reform, and the need for education equality. We are planning to organize, spread the word, and bring more stu dents to attention of the state of affairs that is currently bothering our hearts and minds. The Licking County Students for a Democratic Society also wishes to create politically aware students, faculty and the Licking County community. The Licking County SDS is made up of the schools of Licking County and each school has a branch of the Licking County SDS Chapter. Each school under the Licking County SDS can elect or appoint its own sub-organizer.
The Aims of the SDS are ones felt by many outside the academic arena. Licking County SDS is focused on building a unified network in the High schools of Licking County. The Licking County SDS will work with other organizations already present in Licking County and will strive to do its best to help those organizations as long as the goals are in line with that of the Licking County SDS. The responsibilities of the Licking County SDS are similar to that of a student union, The Licking County SDS, within its capacity as representatives of the student body, will fulfill a range of responsibilities, such as:
• Representing the interests and concerns of the student body and serving on school-wide committees made up of students, faculty, and administrators
• Sponsoring and help fund school programs (e.g. Homecoming, concerts, parades, speakers, entertainment, etc.)
• Helping out students in trouble by letting them know their rights, privileges, and by also standing up for them.
• Organize the students in a union in which they are protected and helped.
• Striving for more student power, student's rights, privileges, and a more democratically run school in which the students have protection and rights.
• If there is a responsibility that is not listed above, that does not mean that this is not the responsibility of the Licking County SDS. If the responsibility is in the student's of Licking County interest, then it is a responsibility of the Licking County SDS.
STUDENTS FOR A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY is an association of young people on the left. It seeks to create a sustained community of educational and political concern; one bringing together liberals and radicals, activists and scholars, students and faculty. It maintains a vision of a democratic society where at all levels people have control of the decisions which affect them and the resources on which they are dependent. It seeks a relevance through the continual focus on realities and on the programs necessary to effect change at the most basic levels of economic, political and social organization. It feels the urgency to put forth a radical, democratic program whose methods embody the democratic vision. Preamble, SDS Constitution
