Well, Glory Be, Cincinnati-based social-conservative group Citizens for Community Values was successful in suing the Upper Arlington Public Library for the policy-breaking right to pray and sing in our meeting rooms.
As a UA taxpayer, frequent library patron and First Amendment supporter, I say, fine. But there are a few things these out-of-towners should know about our community.
First, CCV should know that hundreds, perhaps thousands, of UA area people have already participated in the Faith & American Politics adult education course offered through local churches. This is exactly the topic they propose to discuss (and pray and sing about) at the library.
Unlike most communities, UA supports its libraries through property taxes -- Big Time. As someone who has contributed thousands of dollars to library funding over the years, I think my opinion about what happens at UAPL counts a whole lot more than CCV's.
Now that they've bullied their way into the library, CCV can have their revival meeting. I'll be watching the UAPL special events calendar, though. I hope their meeting has plenty of bells and whistles!
Free speech is for everyone!

Those Jezebel Librarians will get what's comin' to them. Yup - they'll be gettin' pink slips. Those sluts will be replaced one by one for all the filthy - dirty - adulterous - heretical books, magazines, videos, CD's that currently line the Public Libraries' shelves and stink: like Satan's feces. Mrs. Bowers WILL see to it that not one single dollar from Unemployment Compensation will reach the wallets of those brazen stacks walkers. For some time, Pastor Deacon Fred has had his paternal eye on those precious dollars from Unemployment Compensation. Pastor Deacon Fred and Mrs. Betty Bowers just submitted their petition to the state ballot board eliminating Unemployment Benefits For Former Librarian Whores and directing that money to the Faith - Based Funding entity - The Lord's Lobby Opposed to Lascivious Librarians.

I'm not a lawyer, so at first I naively believed that this was a spontaneous action on CCV's part, but now I realize they've been planning this for years. They want to tangle with UAPL after the drawn-out discussions about displaying Outlook Weekly and Gay Peoples Chronicle a few years ago. (I would say CCV won that dispute -- Outlook's covers are much more tame than they used to be.)
I am vehemently opposed to holding prayer and worship services in our public library, and I'm not too crazy about public praying inside the Statehouse either. I myself am a Christian church member. I don't believe that gives me any special privileges.
