The State of Perfect Balance

Ohio Means Business
As a cranky old Ohioan, I was dismayed when the state tourism people stopped using the "Ohio: The Heart of it All" slogan. After all, we are a heart-shaped state located more-or-less in the Heartland of the country. It was a much better tagline and logo than "The Wonderful World of Ohio," which appeared to be an NBC/Disney knockoff in design and color (and, well, didn't exactly reflect truth in advertising, given our nasty rest-stop pit toilets of the late 60s).

But I suppose we shouldn't pursue the U.S. geographic-anatomical metaphor, lest we offend our armpit neighboring states as well as the Deep South.

Recently, the Ohio Business Development Coalition rolled out the "Ohio: The State of Perfect Balance" campaign. I've been trying to think of something sarcastic  to say about this new slogan, but, alas, I must admit, it's pretty good.

"Perfect balance," reinforced with a perfect circle O in Ohio suggests precision machinery (Perfect Circle is, in fact, an automotive parts brand name of Toledo-based Dana Corp.) as well as New Age "OM-ness" to me. It's a contemporary theme, and the OBDC website integrates the work-life balance idea with the slogan nicely.

It's a clever use of fonts. I feel compelled to draw peace symbols, yin yangs and male & female symbols inside the capital O. I'm so glad they didn't design the O's of Ohio in equal proportions with a "HI" in the middle. They look like breasts that way.

Yup, not bad. The best Ohio slogans I can come up with are "This Ain't West Virginia, Baby!" and "Jon Stewart Thinks We're Adorable."  I like their slogan better, although it's a little risky using that word "perfect."

More Ohio slogans

Dispatch Columnist Joe Blundo (an Ohio humorist who has generated more lol material than James Thurber ever did) points out today that Ohio has also begun using the slogan "Too Much Fun for Just One Day" in its tourism ads. I'm not crazy about this one. My suggestion: "350 miles to Chicago...You're Drowsy...Pull Over"
