Post from Average Jane's blog:
Out the gun owners
My neighbor needs my permission to build a gazebo, but he can keep an arsenal of hand guns and not tell anyone. What kind of BS is that?

That worn-out Second Amendment seems to be my nemesis. Right to bear arms, huh? How about nukes? Explain that to Iran, NRA.

Why is it OK to secretly keep a gun collection in an urban area? We have the right to know if our neighbors are sex offenders or industrial polluters. Why not gun owners? This doesn't infringe on my neighbor's right to self-defense -- in fact, it may make him safer.

A couple of hand gun owners I know fancy themselves as defenders of their neighborhoods. To them I say, No Thanks. If anyone has a gun around my home, I want them to have a badge and ID.

Knives, clubs and scissors

We need to add these to the ATFs list of watch items. All should have to register their old baseball bats, fingernail clippers, and magnifying glasses (they can inflict a nasty burn). Better yet, let's create another Government department to oversee the even distribution of all lethal objects - or would it be better to just ban all things that have even the most remote chance of causing harm.
Bubble-wrap for everyone!!!

What are you afraid of? Does he fire his weapons inside or outside? Has he made threats? Are there unsolved mysteries in your neighborhood involving guns?
And why do you call this 'secretly'? You know about it. I'm sure you've told your neighbors. Have you informed your neighbors that you 'secretly' own knives?
People own guns. Get over it.

"Get over it?" Tell that to the 1,800 American women who are murdered by firearms every year.

Boys can have their toys. I'm just asking for notification.

I don't want to answer your specific questions for my own safety. I only know my neighbor owns lots of guns because his exwife told me. Is that any way to get news about your neighbors? I can find out the price of my neighbor's house. Why can't I find out online if I live in a neighborhood of gun owners or not? I may not of chosen to live here if I knew what I know now.

If you live in America, you will have neighbors who own guns.
Who are the gun owners?

If it's legal to keep dozens of semi-automatic weapons in a stockpile in suburbia (and it is), I want to know where. Are the gun owners ashamed to reveal themselves? We have to publicly register cars and pets. Why not guns?

If it's true that we all must accept "you will have neighbors who own guns," I just want to know where they are.
Personal terror threat
By Average Jane Aug 5th 2008 at 6:51 am EDT
What are the odds of me or my family getting blown away by a neighbor versus a foreign terrorist?

Are you telling me that it's useless to try to combat that threat?
Chances are

The number of incidents where a gun owner shoots his neighbor are tiny (much smaller than small). You're more likely to be bitten by a rabid animal or struck by lightning.

Shooting accidents are largely inflicted upon the gun owner themselves (cleaning or hunting).

Shooting someone on purpose is largely confined to illegal activities (drugs, robbery, etc.). Of course the shooting itself would be illegal too.

The second amendment is not worn out. How people have interpreted it is. But that doesn't mean people should NOT be allowed to own a gun, or many guns. Personally, I have never owned one. But I have taken my daughter to fire several different guns so that she understands what they can do.

This may sound crazy, but I would encourage you to talk to your neighbor about his guns. Gun owners that I know keep them locked up; unloaded. And everyone in the household (that are old enough), know how to handle them - and when they are allowed to handle them.

Guns are dangerous - when handled by uninformed people.
