One year, our district suddenly decided it was a rule that ALL students had to have good gloves, coats, boots, and, hats, (for waiting on the bus). However, over 55% of the district gets free lunches and obviously cannot afford all these new items, especially with more than one child! The "student needs" lists, for beginning school, include various items normally considered teacher's supplies. Most families cannot afford this, especially when nearly $60 per student. We don't even have one low-income person on the school board, which is a sin!! Yes, I'm considering running when the next seat is coming open.
Thoughts on Solutions:
Community businesses and organizations should help with generous donations -- as an investment in the area's future. The same should be done on a national level. Also, as a society, we should demand that a portion of ALL professional sports profits are used to help poverty school districts.
