Ohio 15th Congressional District
This group is dedicated to electing a Democrat from Ohio's 15th Congressional District to the U.S. House.

Please stop by Booth 371 tomorrow (Saturday, September 19) from 9 - 4:30,

We will have candidates, volunteer sign-ups, voter registration, issue information and more.

This is Worthington's biggest event -- High St. is closed to traffic from 161 to South Street. We will have our normal wonderful farmers' market, plus arts, crafts, food and community groups like WADC!
Building leaders and organizations can be done one byte at a time. we can use the tools on the internet that are free like Facebook, You tube, Google, and Yahoo.
All of these are free and can be tremendously effective to communicate share and debate. We need to support and encourage activists from around the state to take small steps along the road to becoming a leader and in building their circle of influence. It’s not how large your network is but how well informed and how active they are. Lets talk about his and share best practices
As we pass into the shorter days of the summer and prepare for the county fair; it's rewarding to harvest the garden planted during the cold, rainy weather of April & May. While challenges await from competition with insects and non-cultivars (ie: weeds), I'm glad to have the good health to grow part of the needs for our table, as well as extra for our friends, family & neighbors. I'm really glad that I took the initiative to start a vegetable patch.
Oh, and by the way; the 6,000 acre Orelton Farm, said to be the largest single tract in the state, sold to an ag corporation from Indiana for $27,100,000. I was in the room for the sale; probably the last time that I will see anything like that. Reportedly, it will not be developed into a "mega-dairy".
As the economic recession continues, rural communities will return to basic values that carried earlier generations through difficult times. Financial responsibility and sustainable practices will become fundamental. Locally, we continue to build our London Farmer's Market, begin a similar program in Mechanicsburg and seek food pantries and churches to help distribute excess vegetable production. We are also developing processes to preserve the harvest. Many economic forecasts indicate that employment may be difficult for an extended period; sowing seed now, will result in an abundant harvest.
Over the weekend Ryan Sarni and I started a Facebook page for WADC. We hope friends will join and help us develop it creatively. When I last looked there were 9 friends -- and we need you too.

One WADC member told me to let people know they can't just search for the acronym, or they may get Women Against Drunk Cody. I spent a fair amount of time wondering just how mean a drunk this Cody guy is, that a band of women felt compelled to form a Facebook group to oppose him!

But the WADC I hope you will want to join is the Worthington Area Democratic Club.

Our family decided to make an occasion of it yesterday -- celebrated Claire's birthday with lunch at Latitude 41 (yummy, local food in an elegant setting), then on to Vets' Memorial, which Claire still remembers as the ACT staging area in 2004, when she was in charge of sending people out all over the west side that cold, rainy day. I think it was good to have a sunny day filled with positive experiences to superimpose on that bitter memory. As for me, I associate Vets' Memorial with the Eddie Bauer Warehouse sales staged there years ago (the girls always refused to come with us to those affairs -- back then they said it was one more place full of mulch colored clothes only parents would like!).

Today was different for all of us. Claire wondered aloud if she would cry (voting for John Kerry made her tear up because the election mattered so much).

The Rural Issues Forum in London this week was a great success. With the Farm Science Review in Madison County this past week, it was an opportunity for constituents to discuss a broad range of concerns; from good rural schools to fluctuating grain prices, from genetically modified organisms to concentrated animal feeding operations, and the Farm Bill to sustainable agriculture practices.
Our guests included Joe Logan of the Ohio Farmers Union, Doug O'Brien with the Obama/Biden campaign as Rural Vote Director and former Governor of Mississippi Ray Mabus, past Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and currently a Senior Policy Advisor for Senator Obama.
Additional guests represented communities concerned with the CAFO issue in Williams, Union and Madison Counties; along with several concerned citizens from the local community.
I sincerely thank everyone who attended and hope to make this a regular event; either on an annual or bi-annual basis.
A "Rural Issues Forum" is scheduled for Tuesday September 16, 2008 from 400-530 pm at the London Public Library. The goal is to develop communication regarding issues related to both the agriculture industry and rural communities, during the Ohio State University "Farm Science Review"; which takes place about 3 miles north of London, September 16-18.
Anticipated topics run from locally produced foods to concentrated animal feeding units; from rural infrastructure to school funding, and job creation to renewable energy.
For more information, post a reply.

At 7 p.m. he will appear at Mershon Auditorium, to talk about his heritage, family, and life in politics, as the highest ranking official of Hispanic descent. The OSU Student Union funded the event, and each student can show his/her Buck ID and get 2 free tickets at the Ohio Union office in the stadium.
Sometimes living in the heart of it all is just too much. I was watching MSNBC and Chris Matthews brought Darth Vader, I mean Ken Blackwell, on to do commentary. I hope they aren't paying him! I watched as much as I could stand, and then switched to C-SPAN where they carried a live ONN feed with Jennifer Brunner at a press conference, responding to questions about the Obama law suit and extended poll hours.
Dropped my daughter off to hand out literature for a candidate yesterday evening -- what a spectacle! Lots of Barack and Hillary supporters out on Broad Street waving signs at traffic (who honked happily in response). I noticed that the Barack signs were handmade, and my daughter said it seemed as if the Barack supporters were locals, whle the Hillary people were from out of state. She said some of the Hillary guys were a little confrontational, but pretty nice after she went over and said "Look, we all have to be on the same side after the nomination -- we're all Democrats!" They toned it down after that. Lines of voters were steady, even though the rain picked up and the temperature dropped.

A primary like no other! I voted early, but my daughter wants to go to our polling place. She loves that ritual.
spent the morning at the opening of the Barack Obama office in Central Ohio. Amazing energy and enthusiasm; haven't seen this sort of energy (and this many young people) in a campaign since the 1960 Kennedy campaign, when I was one of the young and enthusiastic folks--even though I couldn't then vote. Obama creates that kind of excitement--palpable in the headquarters, again in a way I've seldom seen. The Kuchinich campaign, also wildly enthusiastic, was different--those of us there were part of a cause, one that we all knew was on some level futile, although we hoped to impact the general election. The Obama enthusiasm is inspired by a new generation of volunteers. And that is in itself great!
WADC is looking forward to an interesting evening. Our featured speaker is Progress Ohio's Brian Rothenberg, who will doubtless have some interesting reflections on Rootscamp, the amazing growth of Progress Ohio, and the ever-changing relationship of media and politics.

In addition we will hear from the two candidates competing in the primary for Franklin County Commissione: John O'Grady and Cindy Lazarus.

We are also expecting brief statements from Mary Ellen O'Shaughnessy (Clerk of Court of Common Pleas), and Jay Perez (Ohio House, 21st district) who are no longer opposed in the primary.

Liz Shirey will speak about ODP's "Neighborhood Leader" project (and I look forward to thanking her personally for her work in putting together the ODP's Women's Organizing Convention last weekend.

WADC always has spirited Q and A sessions, which are frequently the most interesting part of the evening. Come join us for an interesting and varied evening.

The very green mayor of Salt Lake Oity will keynote at the Columbus Green Building Forum tomorrow. In addition to speaking, he and Sen. Brown (how I like to use that title!) will join Mayor Coleman to officially inaugurate Greenview Estates, Columbus' first subdivision of green, affordable homes. The green activities will continue with Columbus Green Building Forum's Green Residential Showcase on Saturday 9/15, which is free and open to the public.   Read More »
The US House of Representatives today voted along party lines to overturn a May ruling by the Supreme Court that wage discrimination cases must be brought within 180 days after the discrimination begins.

House Bill 2831 puts back into place the law that each paycheck is a separate act of discrimination. The vote results were 225-199.

Here is the roll call vote: Click

My Representative, a Ms. Pryce, voted to place an unreasonable burden on employees to prove wage discrimination within six months after it starts. Perhaps Ms. Pryce is unaware that people keep their compensation a secret from their co-workers, so DISCOVERING that you are being under-paid can take quite a while.

President Bush says he will veto the bill: Click

Sorry, Mr. Bush, but the Supremes were "legislating from the bench". The Congress simply put back in place the original law.

Oh, THAT'S right ... these lawsuits (brought primarily by women) may cut into (primarily male) CEO's compensation. Therefore, long-established laws must be overturned by the courts.
From NPR:

...Democrats said that in order to fund a $4 billion expansion of nutrition programs, including food stamps, they would close a tax loophole affecting foreign companies that have U.S. subsidiaries in places like Bermuda.

Republicans, like Rep. Deborah Pryce of Ohio, cried foul:

"In the 11th hour, Democrat leaders blindsided America with the news of how they were going to pay for this bill by putting 5 million American jobs at risk," Pryce charged.

Pryce mentioned the Honda plant in Ohio that she said would be affected by the tax increase.

...

Democrats countered that Republicans were exaggerating the tax's impact, and noted that the Bush administration had itself called for the loophole to be closed.

I find the "Democrat leaders" comment to be particularly telling. I always envision spittle flying from the lips of the NeoCons when they say "Democrat Party", "Democrat Leadership", "Democrat Appropriations Commitee", etc.
I am very fond of Dennis -- but I have to keep him honest. When a question arose about whether or not candidates' children attended public schools, he said his daughter had attended Columbus Public Schools, which is NOT TRUE. In fact, she attended Worthington Public Schools. Now maybe he just figured nobody would know where Worthington is outside central Ohio, but it could be seen as presenting himself as inflating his support of big city public schools.
