Hello Everyone!
It is my pleasure to write about Shawn Dingus, an attorney practicing in German Village who is running for a spot on the Franklin County Common Pleas Bench this November. If elected, Shawn would become the **FIRST** openly gay elected Judge in Ohio! Not many in the GLBT community know about Shawn's campaign, so I wanted to get the word out about it. Shawn is running against an incumbent conservative republican and has been endorsed by the Franklin County Democratic Party and the Stonewall Democrats of Central Ohio. Dingus does have a campaign website, www.dingusforjudge.com . Check it out and learn more about it. Lets make history this fall and show that Gays and Lesbians do have a spot in politics! BRING US DINGUS!!

Party's Left Pushes for a Seat at the TableBy Gerald F. Seib, The Wall Street Journal
August 27, 2008, Denver, CO

Published August 26, 2008, by The Wall Street Journal.

Walk into almost any hotel here this week and you can find an odd sight: Liberal Democrats starting their day by lobbying moderate and conservative Democrats.

The lobbyists are members of the Progressive Democrats of America, an activist group working to keep the party true to liberal priorities, and they have been assigned to every hotel housing Democratic convention delegates.

"At breakfast, where they go to get their talking points [from the national party], we will be there," says Tim Carpenter, a veteran of Democratic campaigns and national director of the PDA.

The fact that Mr. Carpenter and his cohorts feel compelled to buttonhole other Democrats to push a liberal agenda is a sign of a quiet tension lurking within the Democratic Party. That tension is a potential complication for Sen. Barack Obama now, and it is certain to be one for him and his party if he is elected president.

Progressives--the term of art for the party's liberal wing--contend, with some justification, that they have provided much of the fuel that could propel the party to win control of the White House and both houses of Congress for the first time in 16 years. They have contributed and raised large amounts of money, fired up their troops on the Internet, and generally are thrilled at the prospect of a Democratic sweep.

Yet they aren't sure the party they think they are leading to victory is really following them. Sen. Obama has been essentially nonideological in his campaign, has made much of his desire to reach across the ideological spectrum to Republicans, and spent several weeks this summer moving away from the left and toward the center on issues ranging from warrantless wiretaps to abortion to gun control.

More than that, liberals realize that if the party expands its control of the House and Senate, it may do so by electing moderate and conservative Democrats who vanquish sitting Republicans. Thus, while Democratic control in Congress could expand, liberal influence may not.

So the progressive wing of the party has gathered in Denver uncertain whether to celebrate or fight for its due.

"The party doesn't get it," says Mr. Carpenter, who worked on the presidential campaigns of Jesse Jackson, former California Gov. Jerry Brown and former President Bill Clinton. "That's why organizations like the PDA have to organize and energize."

The big question, of course, is: Exactly what do progressives want? For many, the short answer is: Quick and unconditional withdrawal from Iraq, no parallel buildup in Afghanistan, a reduction in the military budget, a broad rollback of the Bush tax cuts, an increase in corporate taxes and a shift of those funds to social spending, a huge government drive for alternative energy sources, and a much bigger government role in providing health care.

Sen. Obama doesn't exactly oppose any of those impulses, but he hasn't fully bought into all of them, either. He'd roll back some but not all Bush tax cuts, for instance, and is a long way from backing the kind of government-funded universal health-insurance system many progressives want.

Rob Kall, a radio host and editor of liberal Web site OpEdNews, says flatly, "Liberals and progressives don't see him as liberal. Universally among liberals and leftists, they seem him as a centrist."

That may be fine with the Obama campaign, which likely calculates that victory hinges more on the candidate's ability to win over independents and former supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton than the party's liberal base, which figures to go along for the ride. Still, Mr. Kall says some members of his Web site are drifting toward third-party candidates Ralph Nader and Cynthia McKinney or questioning how hard they want to work this fall.

The most likely campaign effect, though, is continued pressure on Sen. Obama through the fall to move left on key issues.

Payday Lenders Continue to Spend & Spin

The payday lobby seems to think that their opponents are being bankrolled by "special interests," apparently disregarding the fact that they are one big "special interest." In Arizona, the payday lenders have exceeded the $9 million mark in their efforts to overturn a pro-consumer bill in that state.

You can read an Article from the Arizona Star, here: http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/254016. The article suggests that the industry's opponents raise and spend next to nothing in comparison.

In Ohio, the payday lobby is outspending their opponents by incredible margins. The disparity in expenditures is easily evident just by looking at the millions of dollars spent on television ads by the payday lobby versus the unusual technique being utilized by the proponents of payday lending reform: YouTube.com! CNN Money and Forbes Magazine picked up an Associated Press story about the efforts to compete with a multi-million dollar lobby: http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2008/08/26/ap5360144.html.

From the article:

Up against a multimillion dollar ad campaign, defenders of Ohio's tough new payday lending law are turning to YouTube.com.

The Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio has created an online video that warns viewers not to be deceived by the payday lending industry, which is trying to repeal the law.

You can view the YouTube video, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDoeXujagE4

Despite enumerable examples of evidence that the payday lobby is working diligently to deceive voters, the industry continues to throw up smoke and mirrors trying to change the subject. The facts, however, remain the same. Payday lending is a debt trap and 391% interest is too high!

Don't be fooled by the payday lobby! 391% interest is not freedom! If you think 391% interest is too high, VOTE YES ON ISSUE 5!

Industry Front Group Website Goes Live

The Community Financial Services Association's campaign to overturn House Bill 545 went live with a new website yesterday. Their website, Ohioans4financialfreedom, displays how out of touch they are with real Ohioans.

First, they say: "Protect 6,000 good-paying jobs that could be lost."

This is not accurate. House Bill 545 says absolutely nothing about closing any businesses or preventing the dispersion of payday loans. House Bill 545 simply caps interest rates and fees at 28% APR, protecting Ohio's consumers from predatory 391% APR interest. Payday lending stores have already started applying for licenses to continue operating under the new law from the Ohio Department of Commerce. If any stores close, it's because they choose to, not because they have to.

Second, they say: "Protect your financial freedom and private financial choices."

Payday lenders target low-income neighborhoods where it is easier for them to encourage people to walk through the door. Neon signs with "Get cash in minutes!" and "Easy cash quick," etc. Once a borrower is trapped in a cycle of payday loans, it becomes necessary for the consumer to keep taking out loans. This is not a choice! Usurious payday loans at 391% are bad for Ohioans and bad for the Ohio economy. Usury is not freedom!

Third, they say: "Protect your right to privacy about your personal finances."

This is a nice catch phrase that appeals to just about everyone! House Bill 545 includes a provision calling for the creation of a database that will let lenders know how many loans a person has taken out at a given time. This allows lenders to lend according to borrowers ability to repay - something neither predatory mortgage lenders nor payday lenders seem to care about.

And finally, once again, the industry uses their lame argument for why their referendum should be on the ballot: "Ohioans have a right to repeal bad laws."

Well, it bears repeating that House Bill 545 is one of the best consumer protection laws in the country and will help hundreds of thousands of Ohioans escape the debt trap. Ohioans do have a right to overturn bad laws, but this referendum effort is not being mounted by Ohioans, but by industry lobbyists and attorneys flown in on their corporate jets. Where are the citizens working on this referendum? Where are the consumers calling for 391% interest? They are nowhere to be found. Instead, the industry lobby CFSA is the sole donor to the effort to repeal House Bill 545. This is right in line with what they are doing in other states like Arizona where they've spent $8.7 million to overturn a consumer law and in Virginia where they succeeded in buying higher interest rates for a low, low price of $20 million.

The Ohio government should be PROTECTING consumers from predatory business practices that rely on borrowers getting trapped in a cycle of debt! Payday lending is bad for Ohio!

On Saturday, August 2,2008 Derek Hess and Kent Smith will be at Mahan Gallery - located at 717 N. High Street Columbus, Ohio 43215 to sell and sign copies of their new book "Please God Save Us".

Here is what Northern Ohio Live wrote about the book in their July Issue:

Advance Praise of "Please God Save Us" from the July 2008 of Northern Ohio Live Taken from Northern Ohio Live July 2008 Page 20

"Political Prose and Pics"

Bored with your summer reading list already? Derek Hess and Kent Smith can fix that. Their first book, Please God Save Us debuts July 4. The arguments begin shortly thereafter.

Hess, a Cleveland-based internationally known artist, contributes over 50 full color pieces of art in this magazine-sized soft-cover book. Smith, a Euclid School Board Member and former Free Times writer, provides written justification for Hess' angry images. (You may also remember Smith as the infamous doorman at Brillo Pad and Touch.)

Hess' well-known style remains; his works are oversized, angry, spiritual, funny and emotive. But the subject mater is not abstract; it is subjective and fresh from the evening news. The villain of the book is the menacing red elephant which seems to be killing soldiers and polar bears while polluting the sky.

Hess and Smith take on all the controversial topics including the Christian Right, the Iraq war, global warming, the oil industry, stem cell research, evolution, the media, rock and roll, and censorship. It's a safe bet that this is one way, George W. Bush does not want you to spend your economic stimulus check.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The man accused of shooting dead two people and wounding seven others at a church apparently selected the congregation because of its liberal social stance, the city's police chief said Monday.

Chief Sterling Owen said police found a letter in the car of Jim Adkisson, who was tackled and held by members of the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church after the Sunday morning attack.

Owen said Adkisson was apparently frustrated over being out of work and had a "stated hatred of the liberal movement."

The church is known for advocating women's and gay rights and founding an American Civil Liberties Union chapter.

Owen said the letter indicated Adkisson did not expect to leave the church alive and had 76 rounds of ammunition for his 12-gauge semiautomatic shotgun.

Gay Ohioans Optimistic Despite Marriage Ban

As gay pride month came to a close huge crowds gathered in San Francisco and New York to celebrate gay marriage victories. Crowds attending Columbus' gay pride parade and festival celebrated along with them.

San Francisco's gay pride parade felt more like a wedding march as Californians celebrated their newfound right to marry. In New York a parade route down 5th Avenue filled with an estimated 1 million people. The star of the parade was Governor David Paterson who had signed an executive order directing state agencies to recognize valid gay marriages performed elsewhere.

Counter that with Ohio where a 2006 constitutional ban on gay marriage appears to have stunted the gay rights movement and you would expect people attending Columbus' parade to be cynical.

Yet, hope has a strange way of traveling.

Floats, marching bands, and Dykes on Bikes made their way down High Street on Saturday for the enjoyment of an estimated 115,000 paradegoers. Afterwards, a festival at Bicentennial park provided entertainment, food and GLBT information.

Being black is still bad enough but being gay and educated really sucks. Sometimes I wish I hadn't gone to college .I would at least be blissfully happy not knowing how bad I have it.
Some black gays seem so happy and gay. Not me.I'm still as pessimistic as ever. These days I don't see
anything that looks good in the world for some black gays.Especially if they don't look gay. I've been sexually harassed so many times by black women that I can't see straight . I know that black women are desperate for men but really. Some have taken their
lack of companionship to new heights.

Most gay bars that I go to seem extremelly right wing. I just got back from Cleveland for a few days where I went to the Leather Stallion and had to sit through a boring conversation with some old white queen who seemed compelled to let me know that she was a man of wealth and means .a( if I were supposed to be impressed). The queen also talked about how American foreign policy shouldn't negotiate with it's percieved enemies.I was really turned off and went back to my hotel alone.

I need to say at this point I am definitely NOT open to conversation addressing the relative merits of this law and rationalizations of why this law is okay. It is not okay. The following is "off the table for me":

1. If people really want the info, they'll get it.

2. Anybody can just print it off from the web.

3. Nobody reads these things.

4. Our taxes shouldn't be used to pay for this.

5. Single mothers/fathers and married mothers/fathers on welfare know everything there is to know about benefits. They can just as easily get this information if they cared.

I've been hearing the above opinions frequently in many different contexts. The above 5 statements have been made by normal middle class individuals who lead genuinely self - sacrificing lives to help others.

Obviously, I'm not an attorney. I wish for a magical filing of an emergency temporary (effective AT THE VERY LEAST until all formal results of the November 2008 Presidential Election are made public) injunction in a Federal District Court to shut this withholding of the paper copy of the 2008 Ohio Voter Information Guide DOWN.

Calif. court won't delay gay weddings until vote

SAN FRANCISCO - California's highest court on Tuesday refused to stay until after the November election its decision legalizing same-sex marriage in the state.

Conservative religious and legal groups had asked the California Supreme Court to stop its order from becoming effective until voters have the chance to weigh in on the issue.

An initiative that would amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage has qualified for the ballot. Its passage would overrule the court's decision.

The Supreme Court says its ruling will be final at 5 p.m. on June 16.

Wednesday's denial clears the way for gays and lesbians in the nation's most populous state to get married starting June 17, when state officials have said counties must start issuing new gender-neutral marriage licenses.

On Monday, the initiative that would again outlaw gay marriage in California qualified for the state's November ballot.

California Secretary of State Debra Bowen said a random check of signatures submitted by the measure's sponsors showed that they had gathered enough names for it to be put to voters.

The measure would amend the state constitution to "provide that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

If approved by a majority of voters on Nov. 4, the amendment would overturn the recent California Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in the state. It is similar to gay marriage bans that have been adopted in 26 other states.

Meanwhile here in Ohio:

Columbus--An Ohio legislator has been criticized by his colleagues for sending an e‑mail to the entire Ohio House linking an LGBT equality bill with collapsing families and “a host of mental and physical illnesses.”

State Rep. Jeff Wagner, R-Sycamore, called the Equal Housing and Employment Non-Discrimination Act “dangerous and misguided” in his May 18 message.

The bill, introduced in March, would prohibit discrimination by sexual orientation and gender identity in public and private employment, housing and public accommodations. Twenty other states have similar laws.

The email which Wagner sent to every Ohio House e‑mail address, including 99 lawmakers and all of their staffers stated in part:

"this is a dangerous and misguided bill.

“The bill is not really about people being denied rights to basic needs, but it is about promoting acceptance of an immoral lifestyle. As much as some people would have us to believe otherwise this country was founded on Christian principles. One of those long honored principles is the tradition of holy matrimony. One man and one woman joined together in a union that goes as far back as Adam and Eve,” Wagner continued.

“As our society has gotten further from that standard (not just homosexuality, but easy divorce, cheating on a spouse, etc) we see a continued collapse of the basic building block of society the family unit. As that traditional family erodes we see more sexually transmitted diseases, kids without parents, heartbroken people and I believe a host of mental and physical illnesses.

Twenty three House Democrats responded to Wagner in a letter signed May 23.

“It has come to our attention that you have sent an e-mail to all Members and staff with language that we believe is inappropriate and unprofessional for the civil dialogue this august body normally upholds,” the letter begins.

“We, the undersigned Democratic Members of the House, stand united against any kind of discriminatory speech. Discrimination against anyone for any reason is wrong.

“We strongly disagree with your statements,” the letter concludes.

It is signed by Minority Leader Joyce Beatty of Columbus, Ted Celeste of Grandview Heights, Chris Redfern of Catawba Island, Robert Hagan of Youngstown, Mike Foley of Cleveland, Tom Letson of Warren, Ron Gerberry of Ashtabula, Joe Koziura of Lorain, Kenny Yuko of Richmond Heights, Peter Ujvagi of Toledo, Dale Mallory of Cincinnati, Sandra Williams of Cleveland, Dan Stewart of Columbus, Barbara Boyd of Cleveland Heights, Edna Brown of Toledo, Mike Skindell of Lakewood, Steve Slesnick of Canton, Armond Budish of Beachwood, Steve Driehaus of Cincinnati, Tyrone Yates of Cincinnati, Clayton Luckie of Dayton, John Domenick of Smithfield, and Tracy Maxwell Heard of Columbus.

Ann Fisher commentary: Gay-rights foes will be minority before long

A state lawmaker from New Albany backed a bill this year that would give employment and housing protection to Ohio's gays and transsexuals.

That took some courage because the Senate leaders of his party, the Republicans, have no patience for the legislation. And similar bills never have received much attention in Ohio, let alone on-the-record hearings.

But Sen. David Goodman said his active endorsement of Senate Bill 305 was a no-brainer after a conversation in March with his father, a prominent Harvard-trained lawyer. That day, he reminded his son why Jewish law firms first opened in Columbus: No one else would hire Jewish lawyers at the time.

That sort of discrimination is illegal now in Ohio -- unless you're gay.

ELLEN: To me what it feels like just, you know, I will speak for myself...it feels when someone says you can have a contract and you'll still have insurance and you'll get all that. It sounds to me like saying well you can sit there (points in one direction), you just can't sit there (points in another direction). That's what it sounds like to me. It doesn't feel inclusive. It feels isolated. It feels like we aren't owed the same things and the same wording.

MCCAIN: Well, I've heard you articulate that position in a very eloquent fashion. We just have a disagreement and I, along with many, many others wish you every happiness.

ELLEN: Thank you. So you'll walk me down the aisle? Is that what you said?

MCCAIN: Touché

Watch it:

In the past, McCain has been even more radically conservative, opposing civil unions:

– In 2005, he supported an Arizona amendment that would change the state’s constitution “to ban gay marriages and deny government benefits to unmarried couples.” [LINK]

– On Nov. 19, 2006, ABC’s George Stephanopoulous asked McCain, “So you’re for civil unions?” McCain replied, “No.” He instead said they should be able to only “enter into contracts” and “exchange powers of attorney.” [LINK]

– In 2007, McCain said he was opposed to New Hampshire’s bill legalizing civil unions for same-sex couples. “If I were a citizen of New Hampshire, I would oppose it,” he said. “Anything that impinges or impacts the sanctity of the marriage between men and women, I’m opposed to it.” [LINK]

In 2006, he also told the late Rev. Jerry Falwell that would support a federal constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, even though he opposed such a measure in 2004.

NY Media Covers Single-Payer Rally; PA Media Ignores Single-Payer Legislative and Political Gains
By Chuck Pennacchio, Ph.D.
May 15, 2008, Harrisburg, PA

Did you hear? On Monday, May 12th, 2008, fewer than fifty paces from the Capitol Media Center, in Harrisburg's Capitol Rotunda, more than two hundred citizen lobbyists--members of the Pennsylvania chapter of the American Medical Student Association (our future physicians, IF we pass Single-Payer), the League of Women Voters, the Council of Churches, the Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals, Healthcare for All Pennsylvania, organized labor, and the business community--held a news conference and rally in support of Single-Payer universal healthcare's House Bill 1660 and Senate BIll 300.

Like a tree falling in a distant forest, with no mainstream media (MSM) present to record the event, you probably hadn't heard.

If you depend on the Pennsylvania Capitol Media Corps to inform you of such significant advances in our Commonwealth's democracy, you may be forgiven for not knowing. Again. But please don't repeat the mistake. Again.

This isn't the first time Pennsylvania's MSM has ignored the compelling economic ($10B+ in savings), moral (millions of lives saved and improved), and democratic (65% in poll after poll) arguments of its diverse citizen voices in support of the Single-Payer Solution. The MSM must be forgiven; they don't deal well with rationality -- you know, argument, evidence, and analysis.

Pennsylvania's finest reporters--those who cover state politics--also skipped the formal introduction of the citizen-crafted "Family and Business Healthcare Security Act" (twice, in 2005 and 2007); ducked a public hearing before the Democratic House Policy Committee (February 2007); avoided the first-ever single-payer hearing in front of a standing committee, the House Health and Human Services Committee, on March 19, 2008; and drop-kicked the public endorsements of the 900,000-member AFL-CIO, the 35-chapter League of Women Voters, the 20-denomination Council of Churches, numerous business leaders, and many, many more.

Fortunate for our democracy, news editors and editorial board members across the state assure us that their non-coverage is "not systematic." Whew! Had us worried there.

Just to prove that missing historic healthcare legislative milestones has nothing to do with institutional biases, advertising revenues from 'you-know-who,' lack of professionalism, laziness, cynicism, fatalism, and/or fear, we hear--time and again--that information gathering papers, TV networks, and radio stations are simply "short-staffed." "We can't be everywhere," reporters and editors repeatedly cry.

We shouldn't be so harsh on the MSM failing to note our broad-based coalition's critical events related to a paultry ninety-eight percent (98%) of Pennsylvanians directly threatened with personal bankruptcy should they/we endure a debilitating illness, accident, or other catastrophic medical condition. Poor media... Or is it rich media, poor democracy?

So there you have it, folks.

As I've written repeatedly over the last few months, the Single-Payer Solution that tackles the economics, morality, and democracy of healthcare delivery through common wealth, common sense, and common purpose, will pass the State House and State Senate, and be signed into law by Governor Rendell in 2009. But you won't hear about it or see it in the so-called Fourth Estate. No, you'll find out about it through e-mail, blogs, paper pamphlets, and word-of-mouth...

We are democracy--you and me.

Civilized Healthcare is ours to win, person by person, legislator by legislator. 2008 is the year to educate and organize, research and lobby, campaign and elect Single-Payer candidates. 2009 is the year Pennsylvania delivers a 1776-like earthquake: passing and enacting the Single-Payer Solution (HB 1660/SB 300)--the state-level model for saving the United States economy, American lives, and American-style democracy.

Mark my words. Mark this message. Share it with your fellow citizens. Crank up your efforts. Educate and organize, research and lobby, campaign and elect. Single-Payer. Civilized Healthcare.

Chuck Pennacchio is the executive director of Health Care for All Pennsylvania. Visit the website: www.healthcare4allpa.org
Though relegated to the labyrinth in the netherlands, I hope readers find this post in which a friend and proponent from PA speaks of the importance of single-payer health care and the lack of Corporate Media's coverage on the issue. Though speaking of PA, his thrust applies equally to those of us in Ohio pushing for the only real solution to the health care crisis. One must ask, where are so many of those who call out for "progress" and bandy about the word "progressive" on this issue? A disquieting silence is the response, they part of the statuw quo where moneyed interests take precedence over the qualtity of lives of the citizens. Enjoy:

So there you have it, folks.

As I've written repeatedly over the last few months, the Single-Payer Solution that tackles the economics, morality, and democracy of healthcare delivery through common wealth, common sense, and common purpose, will pass the State House and State Senate, and be signed into law by Governor Rendell in 2009. But you won't hear about it or see it in the so-called Fourth Estate. No, you'll find out about it through e-mail, blogs, paper pamphlets, and word-of-mouth...

We are democracy -- you and me.

Civilized Healthcare is ours to win, person by person, legislator by legislator. 2008 is the year to educate and organize, research and lobby, campaign and elect Single-Payer candidates. 2009 is the year Pennsylvania delivers a 1776-like earthquake: passing and enacting the Single-Payer Solution (HB 1660/SB 300) -- the state-level model for saving the United States economy, American lives, and American-style democracy.

Mark my words. Mark this message. Share it with your fellow citizens. Crank up your efforts. Educate and organize, research and lobby, campaign and elect. Single-Payer. Civilized Healthcare.

Yours in reason, common sense, and common purpose,

Chuck
