From Robert F Kennedy Jr writing at the Huffington Post:
A central figure behind the Center for Disease Control's (CDC) claims disputing the link between vaccines and autism and other neurological disorders has disappeared after officials discovered massive fraud involving the theft of millions in taxpayer dollars. Danish police are investigating Dr. Poul Thorsen, who has vanished along with almost $2 million that he had supposedly spent on research.
Thorsen was a leading member of a Danish research group that wrote several key studies supporting CDC's claims that the MMR vaccine and mercury-laden vaccines were safe for children. Thorsen's 2003 Danish study reported a 20-fold increase in autism in Denmark after that country banned mercury based preservatives in its vaccines. His study concluded that mercury could therefore not be the culprit behind the autism epidemic.
His study has long been criticized as fraudulent since it failed to disclose that the increase was an artifact of new mandates requiring, for the first time, that autism cases be reported on the national registry. This new law and the opening of a clinic dedicated to autism treatment in Copenhagen accounted for the sudden rise in reported cases rather than, as Thorsen seemed to suggest, the removal of mercury from vaccines. Despite this obvious chicanery, CDC has long touted the study as the principal proof that mercury-laced vaccines are safe for infants and young children. Mainstream media, particularly the New York Times, has relied on this study as the basis for its public assurances that it is safe to inject young children with mercury -- a potent neurotoxin -- at concentrations hundreds of times over the U.S. safety limits.

Read More »I received a superb email today from Planned Parenthood, regarding the anti-choice TV ad that is to air during this year's Super Bowl. The message from Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards got to the heart of what it means to be pro-choice (see below).
I've signed on to the Planned Parenthood statement and I hope other members of the Progress Ohio community will too. Locally, click here to check out the advocacy campaigns led by Planned Parenthood Affiliates of Ohio Action Network.
Dear Lorraine,
By now you've most likely heard all about it — the anti-choice group Focus on the Family is spending millions to run an ad during the Super Bowl featuring football player Tim Tebow and his mom talking about a deeply personal medical decision she made years ago. She decided to continue her pregnancy against medical advice, due to what had been diagnosed as a high-risk pregnancy.
People have been asking us at Planned Parenthood what we think about the ad and Mrs. Tebow's decision. It's simple. Planned Parenthood respects the right of every woman to make important medical decisions for herself.
Mrs. Tebow weighed medical and moral considerations and decided what was right for her. She made her choice in private, and without government interference. That's exactly what we want every woman to be able to do.
The truth is, the Tebows' experience is completely consistent with what Planned Parenthood doctors and nurses have learned from the millions of women they've served over nearly a century. Women take decisions about their health very seriously. They consider their doctors' advice, they talk with their loved ones and people they trust, including religious leaders, and they carefully weigh all considerations before making the best decision for themselves and their families.
That's the way it should be. And that should be our shared goal — on Super Bowl Sunday and every day.
I hope you'll show your support for ensuring that every woman makes her own personal medical decisions by adding your name to a brief statement from Planned Parenthood.
Thank you for joining with us today.
Sincerely,
Cecile Richards, President

One year ago today, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act became the first major act of Congress signed into law by President Barack Obama.
The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act restored employees rights to challenge pay discrimination. In the year since the law took effect, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reviewed over 1,100 cases where people were denied wage compensation, and some 4,800 charges alleging wage discrimination were filed with the Commission. Numerous court cases have cited the law in an effort to win compensation for back-earnings.
Watch It:
Women are still treated unfairly in the workplace. Wage disparity persists, and women still earn, on average, only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. If the wage gap was eliminated, annual family incomes would increase by $4,000--and the poverty rate would be cut in half. Paycheck fairness for our country's working women would in of itself act as an economic stimulus package.
For all of these reasons (and more), we must strengthen laws against wage discrimination. But don't just take my word for it --hear what Lilly Ledbetter herself thinks we can do to keep women in the workforce from being discriminated against:
"We need to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act....The bill would empower women to negotiate for equal pay, create stronger incentives for employers to follow the law, and strengthen federal outreach and enforcement efforts. It would also strengthen penalties for equal pay violations.
[...] "One of the most important aspects of the Paycheck Fairness Act is a provision that would prohibit retaliation against workers who ask about employers' wage practices or disclose their own wages to co-workers. This would have been particularly helpful to me, because Goodyear prohibited my colleagues and me from talking about our wages. This policy delayed my discovery of the pay inequities between my male counterparts and me by -- literally -- decades."
It's high past the time for women to have the same rights, the same opportunities and the same freedom to pursue their dreams as men do. If we don't get this legislation passed, our daughters could end up having to fight for fair treatment and pay in the workplace--just like their mothers and grandmothers.
The Paycheck Fairness Act is now pending in the Senate. Senator Sherrod Brown is a co-sponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 182). Take action now and tell George Voinovich to support the Paycheck Fairness Act.
Received via email from our friends at Americans United For Change:
What happened in Massachusetts yesterday is a call to action, not a cause for retreat.
The people of Massachusetts voted for change and they are frustrated with the seeming lack thereof. They are hurting and they have not yet seen Congress come forward to ease their pain, punish those who caused this crisis or make sure it cannot happen again.
Unfortunately, they picked the wrong side to blame. Regardless of how you feel about the way the health insurance reform effort has played out, it's important to note that most Democrats in Congress, and certainly the White House, supported swift, bold and effective change. The majority of Democrats in the Senate, for example, support the public health insurance option. But they couldn't get it done because the minority Republicans blocked an up-or-down vote.
When it comes to financial reform, the Obama Administration and Senate Banking Committee Chair Chris Dodd proposed strong legislation to reign in the abuses of the big banks that led to this mess in the first place. The banking committee's Republican leader, Senator Richard Shelby said "no way, no how, not ever."
You get the idea: Lack of change is not for lack of trying on the part of the majority of congressional Democrats. But despite being the majority, the Republicans have blocked them from voting.
Scott Brown is only going to make it harder to do what we need to do in America - like clean up Wall Street and provide good, affordable health care for all. He has shown on the campaign trail that he will stand firmly with his Republican colleagues in favor of the Bush-era policies and politics that got us into this mess in the first place.
And if that doesn't scare you into fighting even harder, I don't know what will.
Call your member of Congress at 202-225-3121 or write your Senators and Members of Congress through our website.Tell them to fight hard against Wall Street, the insurance companies and those elected officials who carry their water.
By electing Dennis Spisak, the Ohio Green Party candidate for Governor this year, Ohio would begin moving in a progressive manner providing progressive changes to help the poor and working class bring themselves out of the 21st Century Great Recession.
What kind of progressive changes could Ohio accomplish?, fellow Green Party Member Howdie Hawkins wrote the following this past week:
It could have been different. When the Democrats swept into power, they had a mandate for bold progressive change. They could have enacted, with broad Center-to-Left popular support, a Green New Deal to address the interrelated crises of energy, climate, and economic depression. Instead of bailing out the big banks and automakers, they could have nationalized them on the cheap when they were insolvent. Public banks could have then restructured millions of mortgages on affordable, long-term, fixed-rate terms for homeowners facing foreclosure. The automakers could have been retrofitted to produce electric cars, mass transit, wind turbines, and solar panels just as the federal government had them make tanks, trucks, and airplanes for World War II. With investments from public banks and federal infrastructure spending guaranteeing a market for a green reconstruction of the nation's energy and transportation systems, US manufacturing, jobs, and the whole economy could have been renewed on a sustainable basis.
It could have been different. But what to do now?
The Democratic Party has been the graveyard for every broad progressive movement since the Populists more than a century ago. 2010 should be the year when progressive movements finally break their dependence on the corporate-sponsored Democrats and present their programs directly to the voters through their own independent candidates and party.
Let's make the choice in 2010 between a Green New Deal and the corporatism of the two old parties.

President Obama has named Amanda Simpson to be a senior technical advisor to the Commerce Department.
That wouldn't be especially noteworthy were it not for the fact that Simpson is one of the first-ever transgender presidential appointees to the federal government, and is a member of the National Center for Transgender Equality's board of directors.
Focus on the Family issued a report on this to its membership on Monday. As you may have guessed, he religious right is apoplectic.
"Is there going to be a transgender quota now in the Obama administration?" asked Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth. "How far does this politics of gay and transgender activism go? Clearly this is an administration that is pandering to the gay lobby." [...]
"We should consider what transgender activism is about," he said," which is essentially recognizing civil rights based on gender confusion."
Matt Barber, associate dean at Liberty University, said the appointment "boggles the mind."
"This isn't like appointing an African-American in order to try to provide diversity and right some kind of discriminatory wrong," he said. "This is about political correctness."
As usual, the Christionists miss the point entirely in their making their case for violating Ms. Simpson's constitutional rights.
The only question that actually matters here is, "is she the best person for the job?".
"If you look at the job she's taking and at her résumé, this is not a quota appointee," Mara Keisling, of the National Center for Transgender Equality, told the New York Post. "She's unquestionably qualified for the job. The story is . . . not that [Obama] appointed one of us but that finally we have an administration for which that's not a deal breaker."
and so wrote, T.S. Eliot...
just when it looks so hopeless...oftentimes, in our personal lives as well as our nation's political life....dark horizons...can create the spiritual will to create a whoe new life, and a...new world...
Ohio needs an enema...in many places, towns and cities...
maybe all across our present poitical spectrum...
one thing is clear...it needs true participation and exchange of real ideas and real information so that the people can begin to understand what exactly is controlling this state and who are trying to keep the people in darkness and in their ignorance
"knowledge is the first principle of any lasting democracy"
James Madison thought real genuine ideas and public awareness was central to any operative democracy
If he did, then perhaps, we ought to also...
Feminism And Gender Equity
We have inherited a social system based on male domination of politics and economics. Dennis Spisak calls for the replacement of the cultural ethics of domination and control with more cooperative ways of interacting that respect differences of opinion and gender. Human values such as equity between the sexes, interpersonal responsibility, and honesty must be developed with moral conscience. We should remember that the process that determines our decisions and actions is just as important as achieving the outcome we want.
Centralization of wealth and power contributes to social and economic injustice, & environmental destruction. Therefore, Dennis Spisak supports a restructuring of social, political and economic institutions away from a system which is controlled by and mostly benefits the powerful few, such as the lobbyists and PACS, to a democratic, less bureaucratic system. Decision-making should, as much as possible, remain at the individual and local level, while assuring that civil rights are protected for all citizens.
Green Party Candidate for Governor Dennis Spisak would allow every Ohio citizen a say in the decisions that affect their lives and not be subject to the will of another. Therefore, he will work to increase public participation at every level of government and to ensure that our public representatives are fully accountable to the people who elect them. He will also work to create new types of political organizations which expand the process of participatory democracy by directly including citizens in the decision-making process.
Green Party Candidates do not accept donations from Lobbyists or Political Action Committees!
Now is the time to show your support for public funding of political campaigns and help Dennis Spisak win the 2010 election for Ohio Governor!
A key component of Dennis' s strategy to win is the grassroots funding available to statewide candidates in Ohio. By taking advantage of the Ohio Income Tax Credit for Campaign Contributions, we can prove the viability of publicly funded campaigns and help bring an end to corporate and special interest control of our elections.
This is not a check-off contribution to a common fund but a full tax credit for campaign contributions to a specific candidate of up to $50 per individual or $100 for couples filing jointly. This is not a deduction. It is a full tax credit. You will be reimbursed with a credit towards the taxes you are assessed by the State of Ohio when you file your 2009 return. This is a great way to promote the new priorities that need to be enacted if we are to move beyond the failed policies of our present corporate funded leadership.
By donating now, you will help Dennis raise funds to run a winning campaign and direct our government to spend your tax dollars in support of the issues that are important to you and your family.
Please make your check payable to:
Spisak for Governor

Friday night, Oct. 30, 2009 11:00 p.m. news - broadcast channel 12 WKRC Cincinnati had a story that the Village of Amelia has canceled their Christmas parade and is replacing it with a holiday parade.
One of the citizens said they will protest. As of this time, Oct. 31, 2009 12:18 a.m., I cannot locate any text on WKCR nor other media outlets. I feel confident that right wing media will outdo themselves over the days to come. I 'd wager the Cincinnati Enquirer won't be able to control themselves.

Should a Miracle Occur and We Get Viable Democrat and Green Candidates Next Time Around,
YOU WON'T SEE ME VOTING FOR SHERROD BROWN - Unless - I Literally Wake Up Tomorrow With
Single - Payer In Effect.
On Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at noon, Moveon.org and some health professionals met with personnel in Sherrod Brown's Cincinnati office to show support for the Senator in committing to the Public Option but - he wasn't there. When Moveon.org left the office they were treated to a scene of an extensively tea-baggered Fountain Square, opposing the "Public Option."
So now, in the light of this article, I think it's entirely possible that I might be correct in my perception that Senator Brown and the Cincinnati Tea Party adherents are perhaps close to a bipartisan compromise.
How nice for them. Count me out.

Aide: Reid likely to include public option in Senate health care bill
Posted: October 25th, 2009 05:14 PM ET
From CNN Senior Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash
...On the same program, liberal Democrat Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio said he could support a public option with the opt-out provision. Brown expressed concern about a trigger mechanism, but stopped short of calling it a deal-breaker.
"The trigger says, 'Let's give the health insurance companies another two years after they've had five decades since World War II to do things right,' " Brown said, adding, "We need the public option now. We need it in large part because it will inject competition into places where they don't have it."...
The Second Bill of Rights was a proposal made by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his State of the Union Address on January 11, 1944 to suggest that the nation had come to recognize, and should now implement, a second bill of rights. Roosevelt did not argue for any change to the United States Constitution; he argued that the second bill of rights was to be implemented politically, not by federal judges. Roosevelt's stated justification was that the "political rights" guaranteed by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights had "proved inadequate to assure us equality in the pursuit of happiness." Roosevelt's remedy was to create an "economic bill of rights" which would guarantee:
· A job with a living wage
· Freedom from unfair competition and monopolies
· A home
· Medical care
· Education
· Recreation
Roosevelt stated that having these rights would guarantee American security, and that America's place in the world depended upon how far these and similar rights had been carried into practice.
This bill of rights would make America great again…….

President Reaffirms Support For Repeal Of "Don't Ask Don't Tell" Activists Want Promises Turned Into Action
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama reaffirmed his campaign pledge to end the ban on homosexuals serving openly in the military in a speech Saturday, but offered no timetable or specifics for acting on that promise.
He acknowledged to a cheering crowd that some policy changes he promised on the campaign trail are not coming as quickly as they expected.
"I will end 'don't ask-don't tell,'" Obama said to a standing ovation from the crowd of about 3,000 at the annual dinner of the Human Rights Campaign, a gay civil rights advocacy group.
The law was passed by Congress in 1993 and signed by President Bill Clinton, who also promised to repeal the ban on homosexuals in the military but was blunted by opposition in the military and Congress. Obama said he's working with Pentagon and congressional leaders on ending the policy.
"We should not be punishing patriotic Americans who have stepped forward to serve the country," Obama said. "We should be celebrating their willingness to step forward and show such courage ... especially when we are fighting two wars."
Obama said it was no secret "our progress may be taking longer than we like." He followed this by asking supporters to trust his administration's course.
"I appreciate that many of you don't believe progress has come fast enough," Obama said. "Do not doubt the direction we are heading and the destination we will reach."
Some advocates said they already have heard Obama's promises – they just want to hear a timeline. Cleve Jones, a pioneer activist and creator of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, said Obama delivered a brilliant speech, but added "it lacked the answer to our most pressing question, which is when."
"He repeated his promises that he's made to us before, but he did not indicate when he would accomplish these goals and we've been waiting for a while now," said Jones, national co-chair of a major gay-rights rally expected to draw thousands of gay and lesbian activists to the National Mall on Sunday.
Watch It:
Dave Harding posted this recently: "During the debate of health care amendments involving required coverage today, GOP Sen. Jon Kyl (AZ) made an unbelievable statement: 'I don't need maternity care. And, so requiring that to be on my insurance policy is something that I don't need and will make the policy more expensive.'"
Unbelievable is right. How painful that a congressman should have so little empathy for half of his constituency.
Personally, I'm a very empowered female -- so much so, I just might explode. But it seems to me that the extreme oppression of some groups of women internationally and the more subtle expressions of sexism in this country are no good for anyone. Especially babies.
In Africa, rape has become weaponized. In the Middle East where the Taliban rules, women are routinely beaten for fraternizing with men. Our smarmy, super-rich ally The House of Saud regards women as pieces of property.
Most troubling because of its international influence is the Vatican. According to The Vatican's Women by Paul Hofmann, the pope rarely has any contact with women, except for his nun-housekeepers. What kind of world view is that?
I don't know about you, but the idea of a celibate priest lecturing me on married life gives me the creeps. This church leadership doesn't excommunicate child molesters or even murderers, but it does excommunicate those who ordain women priests. Geez...how can I take anyone seriously who has such a low opinion of me?
Anyhoo, getting back to our democracy. Just to review, we never did pass the Equal Rights Amendment, women still get paid 77 cents on the dollar compared to men, a woman is sexually assaulted every 2 1/2 minutes in this country, there is extreme discrimination when it comes to maternity health care, sexist legal language, etc., etc.
As a woman I wouldn't want to live anywhere besides the USA. But the male-only leadership of certain powerful and often secret fraternal organizations is not advancing American humanity. Most frightening is the "key man theory" and other holier-than-thou beliefs of the politically influential Family. (I can't even explain how far the destructive tentacles of these guys reach. Please read the book by Jeff Sharlet.)
From Augusta National Golf Club to Catholic Church influence, democracy suffers when one group's ability to pursue happiness trumps another group's.
I believe men are better off with partners and coworkers, not subordinates. (Just ask David Lettermen.)

Butler budget group: List essentials
By Amber Ellis • aellis@enquirer.com • September 17, 2009
The latest suggestion from a new Butler County budget group involves creating a list to separate the essential and non-essential services the county provides.
Butler County Auditor Roger Reynolds, a member of the group, said the distinction is needed to understand what the county has to provide and what should be eliminated as department heads brace for more cuts. He asked commissioners to consider the idea during their Thursday morning meeting.
"It goes back to needs and wants," Commission President Don Dixon, also a member of the budget committee, said.
The board did not take any action on the recommendation. Instead, they put it under review much the same way they did earlier suggestions made by the group of elected officials and financial experts looking to help solve the county's budget woes.
Earlier ideas include forming a separate fund for debt payments, creating a draft budget and asking commissioners to put updates about the group's progress on the county's Web site.
The group formed this summer after a round of mid-year budget cuts, dozens of layoffs and other reductions.
In all, county officials trimmed more than $8 million and borrowed $5 million from cash reserves to balance this year's $91 million general fund budget.
The county finance team is still crunching numbers, but if revenue continues to drop, another $4 million to $9 million will need to be trimmed next year.
It is unclear what cuts will be made and how those will impact services.

Section 8 Waiting List To Open In Butler Co.
Reported by: Terry Helmer
Email: thelmer@wcpo.com

Last Update: 2:02 pm
Saturday,October 3 will be the date for anyone wishing to get on the waiting list for Butler Metropolitan Section 8 housing.
It's been five years since the waiting list was last opened back in 2004. Over 2,300 applications by low income residents were received in a six hour period back then. It's taken The Housing Authority 5 years to get all but 70 of those 2,300 persons placed with vouchers for housing.
Butler Metropolitan Housing has almost 1,000 persons currently using vouchers for housing. Barbara Brown Section 8 Manager says, "because of the economy the way it is, we expect a lot of new people that have never had assistance before."
Brown estimates as many as 5,000 people may file pre-applications on Saturday.
Besides the Section 8 housing applications, other agencies dealing with low-income based programs such as food stamps, energy assistance, and Legal Aide will be there to tell people about those services.
The application for housing vouchers will be at the New Life Vineyard Church, on Princeton Road in Hamilton. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3. The agency will hand out numbers on a first come first served basis.
In that speech, President Obama said, “No one should go broke because they get sick.” Indeed, health care reform should end medical bankruptcies, medical foreclosures, and avoidable deaths from going without needed health care. That means health care reform must make health care truly affordable to every American. We must get the details right.
The biggest part of the price tag for health care reform is providing subsidies to help low and moderate income families so that they can purchase insurance through the new Exchange. Because no employer is contributing, individuals and families have to pay the whole premium (averaging $4,347 for an individual and $12,145 for a family in Ohio). That’s why subsidies are critical.
All the bills create an affordability standard – caps on yearly premium and out-of-pocket costs; adequate benefits; exempting very low-income people from premiums; and narrowing the rate differences between young and old folks. Even under the standards in the HELP and House bills, many low and moderate income families will struggle to afford coverage.
But, to lower the price tag for health care reform, Senator Baucus takes a bit out of those standards. In other words, he’s saving an estimated $200 billion over 10 years off the backs of our most vulnerable citizens. The savings amount to a mere $20 billion annually – chump change for the federal budget when you think about what they spent on tax cuts to the rich, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, bank bailouts. And when you recognize that the US spends $2.4 trillion per year on health care.
Health care is a moral issue and THE defining justice issue for our nation today. Will we finally decide, as a nation, that every American has a right to health care? Then, we must ensure that health care is affordable. Otherwise, the right will be an empty one. People who get sick will continue to go broke. People will continue to die from lack of health coverage.
