*** Here is a dumb quote from Kasich (Pomeroy Daily Sentinel):There’s one reason why John Kasich, R-Westerville, is running for governor —
“I want this state to be great again.”
Duh! Does he think he is the only person in the state that wants Ohio to be restored to a vibrantstate? Gov. Ted Strickland wants the same thing, but there is one difference in the way thatStrickland will rebuild Ohio--- by repairing the economy of Ohio for all the people, not just thewealthy. Kasich, on the other hand, will give tax breaks for the rich on the backs of budget cutsin agencies that serve the poor and elderly, children in public schools, selling off public land, etc.,etc., etc. An analysis of Kasich's budget by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (5/19/98)had this:...Among the most striking features of the Kasich budget plan are its disproportionate cuts in
programs for low-income families and its focus on reducing support for low-income working families
and individuals and those seeking to leave public assistance for work.
Programs targeted on low-income families and individuals make up only 23 percent of all mandatory program expenditures but would bear 42 percent of the mandatory program reductions outlined in the Kasich budget document.(1) These programs would bear nearly twice their proportionate share of the plan's mandatory program reductions..... Two-thirds of Ohio counties have destroyed or lost their 2004 presidential ballots and related election records, according to letters from county election officials to the Ohio Secretary of State, Jennifer Brunner.
The lost records violate Ohio law, which states federal election records must be kept for 22 months after Election Day, and a U.S. District Court order issued last September that the 2004 ballots be preserved while the court hears a civil rights lawsuit alleging voter suppression of African-American voters in Columbus.
The destruction of the election records also frustrates efforts by the media and historians to determine the accuracy of Ohio’s 2004 vote count, because in county after county the key evidence needed to understand vote count anomalies apparently no longer exists.
“The extent of the destruction of records is consistent with the covering up of the fraud that we believe occurred in the presidential election,” said Cliff Arnebeck, a Columbus attorney representing the King Lincoln Bronzeville Neighborhood Association, which filed voter suppression suit. “We’re in the process of addressing where to go from here with the Ohio Attorney General’s office.”
“On the one hand, people will now say you can’t prove the fraud,” he said, “but the rule of law says that when evidence is destroyed it creates a presumption that the people who destroyed evidence did so because it would have proved the contention of the other side.”
Brunner’s office confirmed the 2004 ballots were missing, but declined to comment. Read More »

I've been writing about various states just beginning campaigns for single-payer healthcare. Pennsylvania is on the cusp of completing one.
They claim to have the best legislation, which will provide everyone with healthcare, pay for it, and in fact save people and businesses money, as well as getting around the federal restrictions Congressman Dennis Kucinich has attempted unsuccessfully thus far to waive for states. In Pennsylvania they have Democratic and Republican cosponsors. Imagine that in Washington, D.C.! And they have a governor ready to sign the bill into law.
Health Care for All Pennsylvania clearly has one of the best websites. Pennsylvania's campaign at http://healthcare4allpa.org , led by Chuck Pennacchio, makes a good model for other states to learn from and provides resources other states might do well to borrow or modify. This website is full of PDFs, power points, charts, and videos explaining the benefits of state-level single-payer healthcare, plus all kinds of references for further reading, and even a good list of links to similar campaigns in other states, including California, Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, and Wisconsin. Finally! The Columbus area ministers who filed a complaint to revoke the non-profit status of the secretive “Family” are to be congratulated. “The Family,” founded in 1935, has a public agenda of promoting “prayer breakfast groups” but their real agenda has always appeared to be preying, not praying. The non-profit behind “The Family” is the Fellowship Foundation. It’s 501(c)(3) mission statement reads: “To develop and maintain an informal association of people banded together, to go out as ‘ambassadors of reconciliation’ modeling the principles of Jesus, based on loving God and loving others.”
At least they’re not hypocrites. At the notorious swinging pad known as the C Street house at 133 C Street, Washington D.C., owned by the Family, U.S. representatives and senators practice their mission of “loving others.” They rent rooms for a reported $600 per month where they stay as “short-term” guests. Most recently one of their Christian brethren, former Congressman and South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, was caught up in a highly publicized affair with an Argentinian woman. Also, last year, Congressman Chip Pickering’s wife sued him for divorce, alleging he had an affair “…while living in the well-known C Street complex in Washington D.C.” In June 2009, long-time guest at the C Street complex, Senator John Ensign, also admitted to an extra-marital affair.
In this former convent, once belonging to St. Peter’s Church, members can practice Christian love with foreign and domestic booty. Ensign’s affair was with his former campaign treasurer and the wife of his co-Chief of Staff, Doug Hampton. Although Hampton probably saw it coming, since he was a friend and fellow Family worshipper. Read More »

Like a decayed flotilla of rickety steamers, at least 27 of America's 104 aging atomic reactors are known to be leaking radioactive tritium, which is linked to cancer if inhaled or ingested through the throat or skin.
The fallout has been fiercest at Vermont Yankee, where a flood of cover-ups has infuriated and terrified near neighbors who say the reactor was never meant to operate more than 30 years, and must now shut.
In 2007 one of Yankee's 22 cooling towers simply collapsed due to rot.
Now the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has confirmed tritium levels in a monitoring well at Vernon to be 3.5 times the federal safety standard. The leaks apparently came from underground pipes whose very existence was recently denied by VY officials in under-oath testimony at a public hearing. Vermont's pro-nuclear Republican Governor Jim Douglas has termed the event "a breach of trust that cannot be tolerated." Read More »

"It is important to note that American election integrity advocates haven't been the only ones protesting the use of electronic voting machines counting their votes in secret. Citizens of other democratic republics, such as, Ireland, The Netherlands and India, are but a few of the growing number of countries that have either banned e-voting or are presently fighting to ban them and demanding a return to hand counts and the kind of voting every citizen can oversee and understand. The most recent has been Germany."
"Therefore, the most effective and pro-active action we, the People, can take in the wake of this horrendous decision by our U.S. Supreme Court is to immediately demand a return to publicly hand-counted paper ballots at the precinct level on election night and to posting the results at the precinct - before any ballots are moved - so the results can be publicly documented by citizens which will protect the integrity of the final tally at local, state and federal levels."
Submitted by Nick D on Tue, 01/26/2010 - 8:14pm. So, just read this Pee Dee article which mentions at the very end presumptive GOP gubernatorial nominee John Kasich's video rebuttal of Gov. Strickland's State of the State address. What insight did Mr. Lehman Brothers Managing Director/Faux News personality Kasich provide?
He said he "didn't hear Strickland take responsibility for Ohio's poor economy."
Well, I would refer him to the Ohio newspaper poll which (H/T Joe @ Plunderbund) shows that exactly 3% of Ohioans blame Strickland for the state's economy.
Three percent.
News flash for Kasich: 97% of Ohioans do not blame Gov. Strickland for the state of our economy. Wouldn't you agree that means he doesn't need to take responsibility? Doesn't it expose how transparently political your suggestion he should take responsibility really is?
Who do they blame, you might ask? Well 24% blame George W. Bush. and 23% blame greedy Wall Street bankers like....John Kasich.
Ouch. Way to step in it, Johnny. Keep it up.
Welcome to The Kicker!
This is the blog of the Medina County Democratic Action Committee, (MCDAC). Our mission is to take the Democratic message to the grassroots of the Democratic Party!
There is a Cleveland Plain Dealer article on John Kasich appearing before the Cleveland City Club. According to the article, Kasich wants to eliminate the state's estate tax, phase out the state's income tax, and this will, of course, lead to a fiscal rebirth for Ohio. Oh yes, and the state's budget problems are all Ted Strickland's fault.
No where of course, does he mention the ill advised income tax cut that the Republicans put through in 2005. You know, the one that cut the state income tax by 21%, causing at least a two billion a year drop in revenues. No, Blowhard John just ignores that fact and blames Strickland for the fiscal mess the state government is in.
Expect more of this type of bs from Blowhard John over the next 17 months until the election. Hopefully, after he is defeated, it will cease, but don't count on it.

Green Party candidate for Ohio Governor cites a report by Paul Gipe last week about Ontario's Feed-in tariff program becoming a huge success.
"This is the type of government involvement that is needed to make a successful committment to renewable energy programs and to get them off the ground."said Spisak. "This type of program in Ohio would help people save money and begive the drive toa cleaner and greener Ohio in terms of renewable energies" he concluded.
According to the report, Ontario's new feed-in tariff program got off to an attention-grabbing start December 16, 2009 when the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) announced that it had awarded 700 contracts for renewable energy to homeowners under its expedited microFIT program.
Altogether, OPA received 8,000 MW of applications for wind and solar energy contracts under the province's precedent-setting, feed-in tariff policy.
OPA's remarkable press release was well timed to send a signal, if any was intended, to the Canadian delegation in Copenhagen where Canada was singled out as "Fossil of the Year" by climate change activists for its refusal to limit greenhouse gases.
Ontario is acting independently of Canada's federal government and plans to close all its coal-fired power plants by 2014. The province, Canada's most populous, is also aggressively developing its renewable energy industry. OPA's announcement was the first concrete indication of how fast the Ontario market may grow.

Can the U.S. learn anything from the rest of the world about how to run a health care system? This documentary examines five capitalist democracies and how they do it - each has a health care system that delivers health care for everyone - but with remarkable differences. The countries are the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Taiwan, and Switzerland and the movie focuses on how doctors practice in each country, universal coverage vs. socialized medicine,
and the cost of drugs.

CALL+RESPONSE is a first of its kind feature documentary film that reveals the world’s 27 million dirtiest secrets: there are more slaves today than ever before in human history. CALL+RESPONSE goes deep undercover where slavery is thriving from the child brothels of Cambodia to the slave brick kilns of rural India to reveal that in 2007, Slave Traders made more money than Google, Nike and Starbucks combined.
Luminaries on the issue such as Cornel West, Madeleine Albright, Daryl Hannah, Julia Ormond, Ashley Judd, Nicholas Kristof, and many other prominent political and cultural figures offer first hand account of this 21st century trade. Performances from Grammy-winning and critically acclaimed artists including Moby, Natasha Bedingfield, Cold War Kids, Matisyahu, Imogen Heap, Talib Kweli, Five For Fighting, Switchfoot, members of Nickel Creek and Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers, Rocco Deluca move this chilling information into inspiration for stopping it.
Music is part of the movement against human slavery. Dr. Cornel West connects the music of the American slave fields to the popular music we listen to today, and offers this connection as a rallying cry for the modern abolitionist movement currently brewing. Written, directed and produced by Justin Dillon of the band, Tremolo.

America’s “first” suburbs, those suburban communities built next to America’s urban centers, were once the birthplace of the American Dream. What are they now?
Ohio’s First Suburbs are highlighted in “The New Metropolis," a groundbreaking two-part documentary on the rise, fall and revitalization of America’s first suburbs. Produced by award-winning filmmaker Andrea Torrice, this is the first public examination devoted to the issues facing many suburban towns.
Considered embodiments of the American dream, the first suburbs blossomed after World War II, bolstered by economic prosperity and government support. Now, many struggle with the same challenges as urban centers -- growing poverty, white flight, crumbling infrastructure, abandonment and the continual lure of newer communities further from the cities.
Admission is FREE, donations accepted. Popcorn and soda will be free thanks to co sponsors Greater Ohio.
This screening is sponsored by the Drexel, Free Press, FIlm Council of Greater Columbus, and the Central Ohio Green Education Fund.
Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion moderated by Lavea Brachman, Co-Director, Greater Ohio & Non-resident Senior Fellow, Brookings Institution.

Bob has just returned from a trip to Lybia at the behest of
Moammar Khadafi. He accompanied Cynthia McKinney and a small delegation
of Americans who participated in a kind of "cultural exchange"
conference, and to witness the launching of Mr. Khadafi's book tour.
Khadafi has apparently written a book filled with suggestions for how to
improve the world by addressing various diplomatic and environmental
crises, some of which, Bob says, are rather insightful and astute. Bob
will be on the show to talk about it starting at about 4:30.
That's Talk of the Town, on WCRSlp, 102.1 and 98.3 FM this Wednesday.
Not sure what to think of Khadafi? Is he a "dictator" as the
Western media might have us believe? Should he be taken seriously?
Personally I really don't know the answers to these questions and I'm
grateful to have the benefit of the perspective of someone who was just
there. If you have any questions for Bob Fitrakis you can e-mail them to
the program's host, Dan Thomas at tripd4u@yahoo.com .
By the way; we just increased the height of the tower for 98.3,
in accordance with our FCC permit and reports are coming in from
listeners in Clintonville, Whitehall, Upper Arlington and elsewhere
indicating a dramatic improvement in the signal strength and clarity.
Some folks are finally able to receive WCRS on their clock radios in
their homes that never could before.
