The FISA Flood Continues: Call Now for the Constitution!

Below is the text of an ACLU email asking for people to call their representatives......

Two bills were introduced yesterday to fix the disastrous Protect America Act that was rushed through Congress in August, rubberstamping the administration's warrantless wiretapping program. Both were efforts to fix FISA, but we must make it clear that only the FISA Modernization Bill does the job.

The RESTORE Act caves in to Bush's fear-mongering in a major way by allowing for program or basket "warrants," which aren't really warrants at all. They're the modern-day equivalent of allowing government agents to sit in our living rooms, recording our personal conversations. Only they're more frightening, because the government now has the capacity to monitor us remotely and without our knowledge, and to save the information in a secret database forever.

It's no surprise that the Bush Administration is again using the threat of terror to bully Congress into giving them more power than it needs to keep us safe. To counter these misrepresentations, your representative needs to hear that America can be both safe and free by passing a FISA Modernization bill that protects our Constitutional rights. Please, call your representative right now.

Tell him or her to support the FISA Modernization Act instead of the RESTORE Act.

CALL Your Representative Now.

The most effective calls to Congress are polite, respectful and clearly state what you're asking your Member of Congress to do. Here are some talking points for your phone call:

1. Please support the FISA Modernization Act of 2007 introduced by Representative Rush Holt, instead of the RESTORE Act. Only pass a FISA modernization bill that has individualized warrants.

2. Blanket or program "warrants" that allow the government to vacuum up the international telephone calls and emails of Americans aren't really warrants at all, and they aren't constitutional.

3. Americans are looking to Congress to stand up to the Bush Administration, not cave into threats of being labeled soft on terrorism.
Just a quick and friendly reminder there will be a Precinct Captain training for Franklin County Democrats.

Tell your friends and family!
MoveOn, families, children rallied outside Pryce's office last night because she voted for the SCHIP Bill. We thanked her with our signs and called upon her to lobby more Republicans.

According to the press secretary MoveOn and everyone else out there are contrived and nothing we do is out of benevolence it is all political.

There were many families and children standing there last night. We were there in good faith and supporting her on an issue on which she, families of Ohio, and MoveOn agree.

This bill is about working across party lines, and bridging the ideological gap. The families and MoveOn were there last night to emphasize that very point: we will back Republicans like Pryce when they make good decisions, when they make value-driven decisions.

I am sorry that Rob Nichols did not see it that way.
I am left wondering if Pryce owns those comments or whether she would seek to distance herself from them if she knew about them.   Read More »
MoveOn and friends will be outside outside of Pryce's office on the street tonight--6:15.

500 S. Front St.
We will THANK HER for voting FOR the bill and call upon her to speak with other Republicans to over overturn the veto.

Below are details about the next DFA training session (and remember you can download their powerpoints and the audio sessions if you are behind or can't make the session).

Franklin County NEEDS precinct captains! Call the Franklin Party Democrats to learn more. There will be a training session the second week of October. Call to sign up now.

Tuesday evening, DFA Night School will discuss a number of ways you can make an impact next election by simply talking to the people on your block. We'll talk about canvassing, voter registration, early voting as well as a number of other organizing tactics you can put to use on the ground right now:

Imagine that it's the day before the 2008 election and everything is in place. Your precinct team has already contacted, registered and persuaded hundreds of your neighbors to vote for a new direction for our country. Now imagine that 203,000 precincts across the country have all done the same.

This is what's possible next November, but only if you begin organizing now. Tomorrow night you can join this growing movement to take our country back, precinct by precinct:

To turn the country around- we need all 50 states. To keep Ohio on its new blue course--we need every precinct.
So as you might know-- Franklin County needs Precinct Captains and have a training coming up in October. Call them now if you're interested!

DFA is doing a NATIONAL 4 part training session every Tuesday on being a Precinct Captain. This coming Tuesday will be Part 2. I attended Part 1-it was great, but part 2 is when get they into the details--so it is a great place to start.

See below for details and to sign up!

Last Tuesday, more than 800 people came together for our free conference call training on the power of neighbor-to-neighbor organizing. It is not too late to join in and learn how to develop power for change in your neighborhood. This Tuesday, Night School returns to teach how to recruit and build a committed team of activists in your neighborhood:

This November 3rd is already shaping up to be an immensely exciting and important day for the movement to fight global warming. As you know, this is a crucial year, and it's essential we spread the message about how much we need leadership on climate change. The best way to do this is to organize hundreds of rallies across the country. So, if you haven't already, by all means please start an action today and help recruit others in your state and elsewhere to do the same.

If you want to organize a rally, follow this link!

Hi all

I just spoke with the Franklin County Precinct Captain organizer. They very much need precinct captains! If yours is already filled, which it likely is not --they will give you a nearby open precinct. Think about this-- Kilroy lost to Pryce by a few thousand votes in the last election. If just two or three more precincts were organized that seat would be ours now. And it will be next election IF we organize! There is a training this OCTOBER 11th in the evening.

So to do this... email the following address, Mary Woods (a volunteer, very nice, on vacation for a few days) and she will get back to you. mwoods@ohiodems.org
Or call and leave a message 614-224-1193

Here is a site link for more information along with the general list of duties for a captain.

ALSO: Democracy for America is running a month long series of phone call training sessions on this. If you can't make them they are stored and can be listened to as pod casts at their site. Here is the link below and the general list of duties.

Lets turn around Ohio! Lets turn American Blue!

Environmental Defense Fund asks you to sign a new Declaration.....

Global warming is the crisis of our time.

As we gather to celebrate the anniversary of the American Revolution, we find ourselves at a momentous turning point.

Thousands of you have joined us in recent weeks to draft a new Declaration articulating a New Patriotism to guide present and future generations.

Change is not easy. The drafters of the Declaration of Independence said as much when they said "all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed."

We need to renew our commitment to change every day. We need to communicate our demands to our leaders every day.

That is why this July 4th, the names of every signer to our Declaration will be communicated to Congress.

We hope to have at least 75,000 signatures on our Declaration by July 4th.

I thought this would be a fitting start to the launch of Columbus MoveOn's blog and site on Progress Ohio. Not only is Congress not backing down on the Iraq withdraw (MoveOn had over 300 rallies nationwide including a great one here in Columbus full of honking and cheering drivers), Bush's ratings have sunk to a new low, and ALL leading Dem Presidential Candidates out rank ALL Republican Candidates. Remember as Ohio goes, so goes the country in Presidential elections. We must keep our momentum up! Read more here:Link Link
