Lieberman and Ritchie had previously voted against Husted during his residency hearing.
A rally will be held 8 AM Monday morning at 180 East Broad Street in Columbus to protest this:
Secretary of State Jon Husted shirked his responsibility under the Ohio Constitution today. Instead of simply casting the tie-breaking vote to suppress an effort by two Montgomery County Election Board members to expand voting hours to weekends, Husted suspended the members.
Husted threatened to fire Tom Ritchie, a 17-year board member, and Dennis Lieberman after they voted to open the voting booths on weekends for Montgomery Countynty residents leading up to the election. Two other board members voted against the motion. The Secretary of State breaks tie votes.
"This is un-American," Ritchie said. "It's Draconian. He is using a 2 by 4 to kill a gnat. All he had to do was his job and cast a tie-breaking vote to close the voting booths on weekends, but SOS Husted wants to scapegoat us."
Ritchie said the elections board has the money to let residents vote on weekends, and nearly 29,000 Montgomery County voters used early voting in 2008 so there is a great demand.
Husted has ordered Ritchie and Lieberman to attend a hearing on Monday in Columbus to explain why he should not fire them.
"SOS Husted wants counties to do the bare minimum to help voters. We should all be doing the maximum to open up voting to all Ohioans. All counties should have early weekend voting in this state. Voting is our most sacred right and SOS Husted wants to suppress the vote," Lieberman said.
