Raising the minimum wage is an important step toward an economy that works for all of us, not just the richest 1%. It will put more money in the pockets of ordinary Americans who need it and who will spend it in our local communities. That will help small businesses grow, create jobs and boost our economy.
- The minimum wage can't support our families. The current federal minimum wage of just $7.25 an hour amounts to only $15,080 a year. That's almost $9,000 below the federal poverty line for a family of four.
- Minimum wage workers get $7.25. CEO's get 725%. The federal minimum wage hasn't kept up with inflation; if it had over the past 40 years it would be $10.55 an hour. Yet CEO pay has risen 725% over the last 30 years.
- We all deserve a fair chance for a better life. More and more people - including recent college grads - find only minimum wage jobs available. That impacts all of us. Meanwhile, 80% of all real income growth has gone to the richest 1% of Americans.
Together, we can end the growing gap between the richest 1% and the rest of us.
It's time to make raising the minimum wage a priority!
